Meet Your Local Patch Team

Lance Howland

Lance Howland, Editor

I wrote and edited for three different Patches in 2011 before I signed up for the editor's job in Walnut Creek in July. I'm fascinated by the interactivity of the new Patch journalism after decades of the old interactivity as an editor and reporter in newspapers in New York and California.

I live in Moraga with my wife Anne, our two daughters and rascally orange cat Toby. Email address is lance.howland@patch.com. Phone number is (925) 348-7954.

In my free time, I like to take in a movie with my family and get a big bag of popcorn. I love to jog on trails. Having given up the dream of the NBA, I still play pickup basketball. It's fun to read Faulkner and listen to Dylan, sometimes at the same time.

I'm a native of Skaneateles, New York. I have a history degree from Colgate University and a master's degree in journalism from Cal Berkeley.

Renee Parker

Renee Parker, Calendar Editor

Renee's roots are in the Great Lakes of Michigan.  This is also where she met her husband and started a family which now includes two children.   She then had the opportunity to explore the United States literally living in one end to the other. From Michigan it was off (or they went to) to sunny California, then to the south in Virginia and most recently to the east coast, Rhode Island.   Renee and her family love the New England coast and small town charm.  Renee has become very good at getting her family acclimated quickly in new communities.  Her bouncing around the United States is one of the reasons she found Patch's "one-stop-shopping" approach to community news and information so exciting.  Prior to her "bouncing", Renee worked in the health care field as an Occupational Therapist.  Her interests include photography, scrapbooking, reading, and horseback riding.

TheRealBarman, Contributor, Blogger

I am TheRealBarman, an East Bay bartender with a knack for pointing out the ridiculousness in people and the bar life in general. I write for and love the Patch editors who take good care of me and I also write a blog at TheRealBarman.com because I can swear there like a turrets syndrome misfit and post moronic pictures that only the unemployed would enjoy.

If I offend you, I'm sorry. It's not you, it's me. I use humor and sarcasm as a shield to hide my insecurities and misgivings.

I like bartending, writing, burritos, tacos, tostadas and my family. And shiny things. I like to chase shiny things. If you'd like to send me a message, I will be more than happy to respond as soon as I am sober (I learned that one the hard way).

Cheers.

About Us

What is Patch?

Simply put, Patch is a new way to find out about, and participate in, what’s going on near you.

We’re a community-specific news and information platform dedicated to providing comprehensive and trusted local coverage for individual towns and communities.

We want to make your life better by giving you quick access to the information that’s most relevant to you. Patch makes it easy to:

  • Keep up with news and events
  • Look at photos and videos from around town
  • Learn about local businesses
  • Participate in discussions
  • Submit your own announcements, photos, and reviews

Who’s Behind Patch?

Patch is run by professional editors, writers, photographers and videographers who live in or near the communities we serve, and is supported by a great team in our New York City headquarters. Patch also gets advice from our Editorial Advisory Board and from many members of the community.

We look forward to meeting you, hearing your stories, and being your trusted source for community-specific information.

If you see us around town, don’t be afraid to say hi and tell us what you want to see on Patch!

Where You Come In

We hope that our sites will strengthen communities and improve the lives of their residents, but we can’t do it without you. We’ve built Patch so that you have plenty of opportunities to comment on stories, share your opinions, post photos and announcements, and add events to the community calendar. So get to it! And if you’re a business owner who wants to be listed, just let us know.

Giving Back

You can’t truly serve a community unless you provide the help it needs most, which is why giving back is so important to us. We do it as part of our coverage — in a dedicated space that lets local charities and volunteers find each other — and with a program called “Give 5,” through which we donate free advertising space to charitable organizations and contribute our own time as volunteers.

Patch.org

The Patch.org Foundation was formed in March, 2010 to improve the quality of life in underserved communities across the globe through access to trusted local news and information.

What we do

The Patch.org Foundation plans to partner with community foundations and other organizations to fund the operation of Patch news and information sites in communities that need them most: inner-city neighborhoods and underserved towns around the world.

What we look for

We will look for communities of 15-100k population that are underserved by media and would benefit by having access to local news and information about government, schools and business. These could be inner-city neighborhoods or distinct towns.
