Twenty-one-year-old was walking in highway New Year's morning, struck by highway patrol car, then run over by shuttle bus in Stateline, Nev.

The victim of a pedestrian-two vehicle, fatal accident early New Year's Day in Stateline, Nev., has been identified as Alex M. Moore, 21, of Walnut Creek, the Nevada Highway Patrol announced Tuesday.

Moore was walking in the left eastbound travel lane of U.S. Highway 50, just east of Lake Village Parkway, wearing denim jeans and a black jacket at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday, when he was struck by a 2011 Ford Expedition California Highway Patrol vehicle, according to a Nevada Highway Patrol media release. The CHP vehicle was driven by Officer Joshua J. Varanini, 38, of Truckee.

"Evidence at the scene shows Officer Varanini applied the brakes of his SUV and steered the vehicle to the right to avoid striking the walker," the NHP release stated. "The left front portion of the patrol vehicle stuck the man who was forced into the opposing westbound travel lane."

In that lane, Moore was then run over by a westbound white 1998 Ford F-450, two-axle, passenger shuttle bus, driven by James L. Eastland, 38, of Sparks, Nev. There were no passengers on the bus. Both Varanini and Eastland were uninjured in the accident, NHP reported.

The victim appeared to have alcohol in his system, NHP troopers said.
