City's Veterans Day Celebration to Focus on Civil War
Families will present letters and diaries from Civil War at Friday, Nov. 11 ceremony.

If you have great-grandpa's diary as a Confederate drummer boy carefully stored in your desk, the City of Walnut Creek has an idea for you.
Marking the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, the city's Veterans Day celebration will showcase the Civil War veteran stories of local families from letters, diaries and oral history.
The free event will be at the Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Dr., at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11.
The ceremony will feature a presentation of these Civil War stories. The ceremony will also include a welcome from Walnut Creek Mayor Cindy Silva and a musical presentation by the Walnut Creek Concert Band, including a number of Civil War songs. The Concert Band is under the direction of Harvey Benstein.

The time is mentioned in the article. However, for the future, remember that tradition has it that Veteran's Day is always celebrated on the 11th day of the 11th month and 11 AM.

To the mayor and city council of Walnut Creek,
My name is Aaron Scherbarth, I've been a resident of Walnut Creek for over 8 yrs. and I'm a veteran of the OIF invasion. I recently watched the Veterans Day event on the W.C.T.V. at the Lesher Center for the Arts.
Truthfully, I was greatly disappointed. While I appreciate the history lesson given at the event about the Civil War, I feel that it did not reflect the meaning of the day. The only time any veterans were recognized was when the band played and the mayor asked each of the armed forces to rise. We can do better than that!
I firmly believe that there should be a spot open for any veteran, service member, or immediate family to speak from the podium. I want to hear their stories first - hand about their experiences, their hardships, their concerns, or just their all around gratefulness and love for this county. I am sure there are plenty of other events of which the city leaders have the opportunity to speak from a podium.
I hear the mayor and other city leaders say " Let's not forget these brave men and women"... Well, the first step is: "LET THEM BE HEARD!" The Veterans Day event should be a day for which the "Vets" can use their 1st amendment right to speak and be heard loud and clear.

I respectfully ask you to consider opening a spot (or several) on the podium for any veteran/ servicemen and women/ family in the audience to speak. If necessary, develop a back-up plan in case the event runs a little longer than expected... or shorter if that may be the case.
