Creek Police Beat: The mysterious case of the deer antlers, birth control-pill thieves, and ding dong ditchers get in trouble

Patch's ace Police Beat writer reads WCPD's bulletin every day—so you don't have to. Here, she summarizes a week's worth of crime trends, as well as the bad, sad, annoying and silly things that keep officers busy.

Here's what people were calling Walnut Creek police about from Dec. 18-24.

Saturday, Dec. 18

The Fighting Five: Five "large males wearing Ultimate Fighting Shirts" were kicked out of Tiki Tom's for "challenging others to fight." The five combatants left shortly after midnight in a cab.

An Honest Person: Kudos to the citizen who found a credit card and driver's license in Mr. Lucky's about 1 a.m. The items were returned to the owner.

Job Security: It was a busy night for the WCPD, with six arrests on charges of public intoxication and two on suspicion of driving while under the influence—all before 3 a.m.

The Naughty List continues….  The police escorted some juveniles home after they were caught ding-dong ditching their neighbors on Homestead Avenue at 3:28 a.m.

Tsk, tsk: A black sports car was parked in the handicap spot without a placard in the 1200 block of Homestead Avenue at 9:14 a.m. The car was cited.

Creekside Drive oopsie: A woman phoned police about a "hole in the sidewalk" on Creekside Drive at 10:08 a.m. She was subsequently arrested on a probation violation and a charge of public intoxication on the 1400 block of Creekside Drive. FYI, there are covers missing on some utilities on Creekside Drive. A sober Creek Diva almost fell in the same spot.

Sunday, Dec. 19

A cabbie's lot in life: A man was arrested on a charge of public drunkenness while raising a ruckus inside a cab at 1:52 a.m. New Creek Diva advice for 2011 — Everyone: Take a cab if you have been drinking, behave yourself and please pay your cabbie.

Parking alert: A few cars were towed to make room for the Sunday Farmers Market on Locust Street. Haven't I reminded you folks to not leave your cars parked overnight on Saturdays on Locust Street?

Grinch Mail Thief: A call came in from the Lakewood Circle neighborhood about opened mail strewn all over the street. The mail was returned to the resident. Meanwhile, at El Camino Corto and La Mesa Lane, more holiday mail was opened and thrown into the street.

The green's this way: A golf cart was stolen in on the 1900 block of Skycrest Drive. No suspect at this time.

A varied haul: A thief broke into a dark blue Honda Accord in the 1600 block of Botelho Drive, stealing three purses, including credit cards, medical cards and, in a Creek Police Beat first, birth-control pills.

Sunday, Dec. 20

Naughty Friends: A man and two friends stole beer from a business in the 2300 block of N. Main Street. The driver of the vehicle was contacted and paid for the beers that his friends stole. Perhaps it's time to find new friends.

What a nightmare! A man was stuck in an elevator in the 1300 block of N. Broadway at 4:43 a.m. The Fire Department responded.

Ouch: A home on Overlook Drive was broken into in the middle of the day. There were no signs of forced entry. Loss: jewelry valued at $50,000.

Shutting down solicitors: Several calls came in from neighborhoods all over Walnut Creek about nicely dressed solicitors going door to door. Do what Creek Diva does. Leave a sign by the doorbell stating  "NO Soliciting" in bold font. It might be time for Walnut Creek to ditch the permit thing and ban soliciting.

Don't use a chain lock, ever: A blue-gray mountain bike was locked up on Jones Road, but the lock was cut and left behind. The theft occurred between Dec. 7 and Dec. 14.

Mini crime wave at Broadway Plaza: A man was caught on video stealing $2,000 worth of Ralph Lauren Polo shirts from a Broadway Plaza store. A bigger theft, this time of a White 1987 Acura, took place on the upper level of the Macy's parking lot today, license plate 3ANE354.

Lunar lovers: A caller was concerned about people yelling at 11 p.m. on Sharene Lane. When police questioned the celestial screamers, they explained they were excited about the lunar eclipse. Creek Diva should feel very thankful for her neighbors, one of whom joined her for the lunar entertainment. Thanks Becky!

Tuesday, Dec. 21

War of the Roses: A city employee reported that rose bushes in the median at California Boulevard and Civic Drive had been uprooted in the past 12 hours.

Security goes only so far: A home on Camino Diablo was secured with a keypad entry. However, an unknown subject dismantled the keypad and entered the garage. There, the thief had easy access to an unlocked car, a stereo and a garage-door opener.

Bad golf etiquette: Boundary Oaks reported damages to the third through fifth holes and the flag at Hole 14 was stolen.

Guard precious cargo: Police advised a parent about 10 a.m. who left the car running on Ygnacio Valley Road with 3- to 5-year-olds in it.

Forget the cable locks, too: Two bikes supposedly secured with a cable lock were stolen from the 100 block of Roxanne Court.

Pick up or stay out: Unless you are a Cheesecake Factory To-Go/Pick Up customer, do not park in those dedicated spots or you will be cited.

Rough breakup: A man called about his ex-girlfriend taking his car without asking, and then crashing it. She refused to return the car.

Wednesday, Dec. 22

Boozehound thief: A man fled on foot after stealing a 12 pack of MGD beer from a business in the 2800 block of North Main Street about 12:17 a.m.

Low blow: To the jerk who stole a wallet from a pediatric oncology office and used the credit cards at Target, you are a sad soul.

Low blow, part two: Someone stole Christmas presents from a red Ford Mustang. Just because the door was partially open doesn't mean you needed to play the Grinch.

Great police work: A white male with blue eyes, wearing gray pants, a shirt and a hat was seen running from a home in the 100 block of Los Altos Avenue at 7:40 p.m. He apparently had stolen jewelry and watches. Good news. Two days later, police arrested a male juvenile in the case and transported him to Juvenile Hall on Christmas Eve.

Thursday, Dec. 23

Downright dirty: A man left the keys in his door while taking out the trash from his home in the  2600 block of Jones Road. He returned to find that he had been robbed of $1,200.

Missing a rack? A box of, yes, deer antlers was found on the sidewalk on First Avenue. Did someone think the Lindsey Museum could use these?

Weather watch: With the wild storms we had over the holidays, there were lots of phone calls about broken tree limbs and downed power lines.

Love means never having to say you're sorry: A rather unfortunate fight occurred between two ex-spouses at Safeway on Broadway. To read more, http://walnutcreek.patch.com/articles/walnut-creek-man-arrested-in-altercation-downtown

Friday, Dec. 24

Santa was not happy: A late night fight broke out at Cinco De Mayo and a man was arrested on suspicion of assault and running from the police.

Nattering neighbor: Creek Diva doesn't want to keep reminding people of things, but one more time to my neighbor on Creekside Drive who called 911 six times, rambling about a nonemergency issue — stop it.

Let's not talk: Another phone box was vandalized in Walnut Creek, leaving 175 customers without service around Castle Hill Road and Alberta Terrace. Bitter former employee or mean criminal?

'Tis the season: A last-minute shopping argument over a parking space occurred in the 1100 block of N. Main Street this afternoon.

Drinking from his 'gun': A man was holding a metal coffee cup on Minert and Bancroft roads. The caller who phoned police thought it was a gun.

Hmmmm, a golf cart was stolen, huh?

I hope it's a case of Ralph taking my advice to make Diva's Top Ten list this year.

If you see a naked guy hand-cuffed to a golf cart, be sure to email Diva directly. I'm sure we all have an intense interest in making sure the event gets proper coverage and recognition.
