Homicide Suspect Shannon Alexander Released

Investigation into death of Hayward man is 'pending' and turned over to Walnut Creek Police Department, sheriff's office reports.

The suspect in Monday evening's homicide has been released from custody, "pending further investigation," the sheriff's office reported Thursday afternoon.

Released Wednesday was Shannon Mitchell Alexander, 48, of Walnut Creek.

The investigation has been passed to the Walnut Creek Police Department after "it has been determined that this incident occurred in the city of Walnut Creek," according to a statement by Contra Costa County sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee.

They found a man who had died, later identified as 48-year-old Jeffrey Mead Patterson of Hayward. He suffered blunt trauma to his body, police said.

The body was found in a yard in front of the house. Patterson knew Alexander, police said.
