Mighty Microbes at the Lesher

Science you can understand makes its way east on Ygnacio Valley Road when top researchers from the Joint Genome Institute visit the Lesher on May 9.

Housed in the former Dow Chemical Agricultural Research facilities in Shadelands Business Park in Walnut Creek, the Department Of Energy Joint Genome Institute is breaking down the codes of plant and animal DNA.

Most of us don’t even think about the insides of cows, the genes of waterfleas or the behavioral genetics of pollinating bees, but the 250 expert researchers who sequence microbial species—and actually understand the results—also know how to translate heavy duty science into layman's language.

That is why John Fowler, KTVU health and science editor, will have a conversation with two experts you can understand at the second JGI Science @ The Lesher series, from 7-8:30 p.m. May 9.

The Deal with Carbon: How Earth’s Mighty Microbes Respond—a title as mysterious and packed with potential as the interior of any cow—promises to explain the role microbes play in the carbon cycle and what we must do to restore our planet to a carbon-neutral energy future.

Tickets to the event are free and can be reserved by calling the Lesher ticket office at 925-943-7469.
