More Details on Pedestrian Fatality in Nevada

Identity of Walnut Creek victim still not released.

Authorities expected to confirm the identity Tuesday for the 21-year-old Walnut Creek man who was struck by

Chuck Allen, public information officer for the Nevada Highway Patrol, said police were waiting for a report from the coroner's office, which is trying to confirm fingerprints for the victim. Police did recover ID from the victim that night, Allen said.

Officers checked on the patrol report that alcohol use was suspected for the victim. A toxicology report on the accident will take four to six weeks, Allen said.

The accident occurred on Highway 50 where it is four lanes, separated by a double yellow line. It was about two miles east of the state border with South Lake Tahoe, in a 45-mph zone close to where the zone goes to 35 mph as motorists come into the casino corridor near the California-Nevada state line, Allen said.

At 12:40 a.m. Sunday, the victim was walking along Highway 50 in a left eastbound travel lane when a California Highway Patrol Ford Expedition in the same lane was trying to avoid him, according to the KOLO TV website. The victim was knocked into a westbound lane and run over by a shuttle bus.

The CHP officer was returning to the Truckee station from New Year's Eve duties at a group of casinos in Stateline, SouthTahoeNow.com reported.

Witnesses are asked to contact Trooper Eric Gallagher at (775) 689-4661.
