UPDATE: Man Surrenders to Police, Iron Horse Trail Re-opens

An investigation into a domestic violence complaint prompted police to set up a perimeter around the suspect's Oak Road apartment.

Walnut Creek police re-opened the Iron Horse Trail after a man surrendered shortly after 10 a.m. Friday and was taken into custody on suspicion of beating and sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Andrew Lipiansky, 26, was to be booked into County Jail in Martinez on suspicion of domestic violence, false imprisonment and sexual battery, said Sgt. Jay Hill.

The investigation into the woman's allegations prompted police to form a barricade around Lipiansky's Oak Road apartment, which included closing a short portion of the Iron Horse Trail between Jones Road and the Iron Horse Trail turn-off to the Contra Costa Canal Trail near Walden Park.

Hill explained that situations involving domestic violence can sometimes turn volatile and the barricade helps ensure the safety of police and the public.

The investigation began shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday when the woman came to the Police Department, saying she had been assaulted by her ex-boyfriend.

Police investigated through the night and then at around 7 a.m. set up a perimeter around his apartment.  At around 10 a.m. police reached Lipiansky by phone and told him he was a suspect in the assault. Hill said Lipiansky agreed to surrender peacefully.
