Rescue Event is Pugtacular
Money raised at the event at Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation goes to medical expenses for rescued pugs.
More than 100 pugs and pug mixes of all sizes, shapes and ages were everywhere at Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation in Walnut Creek on Sunday.
The dogs and their humans came from all over Northern California and Nevada to attend the 16th annual Pugtacular that raises money for pug rescue groups. The beneficiaries included the Northern California Pug Club and the Pug Rescue Of Sacramento.
The event featured a Santa posing for photos with pugs and their families, a Best Pug Costume contest, demonstrations, games and pug races.
Gene Austin, president of Pug Rescue of Sacamento, said the event helps pay for medical expenses for rescue pugs.
"I got my first rescue pugs about 25 years ago," said Austin, who now has four rescue pugs and has been the group's president for about 10 years. "We rescue about 100 pugs a year and also adopt out many."
Princess Daisy, 4 1/2 years old, was born without working elbows. Owned by Richard Linton of Richmond, she gets around in a little cart that holds her front legs.
"I found her at the Oakland shelter when she was seven months old and I adopted her," Linton said. "I found a place that made a cart for her, trained her in the cart, and she's been in the cart for three and half years now. She visits the veterans at the Martinez clinic at the rehab wing."
Daisy propels herself around in the cart and doesn't let her disability get in the way.
"She likes to go explore, loves kids. She's a trained therapy dog now," Linton added.
The fund raiser was expected to raise about $2,000.
