Rossmoor Postal Annex Closes, Affecting Vacation Mail Pickup
Postal station with customer services remains open at the other end of Rossmoor Shopping Center.
Last week, Patch reported that no Walnut Creek postal offices were on the national closure list.
Yes and no.
An alert Rossmoor reader, Bill Oman, wrote in to point out that the postal annex on Rossmoor Parkway behind the Safeway was closing Friday. The annex has been used for decades by carriers for sorting and staging.
It didn't appear on the delivery unit optimization national list because the tally did not include operations not considered "customer service," said Gus Ruiz, who works in corporate communications for the U.S. Postal Service.
But there is a small customer service operation that has operated out of the annex for years — Rossmoor residents have been able to pick up vacation mail there. Now, with Friday's closing, residents must go to the downtown Walnut Creek post office at 2070 Broadway.
Several hundred feet away, at the other end of the Rossmoor Shopping Center next to Wells Fargo, is the Rossmoor postal station with the usual customer services, including post office boxes. This is the postal unit many Rossmoor residents use.
It's all part of the consolidation as the postal service tries to make itself more efficient.

That is a loss for Rossmoor residents who cannot drive. Their shuttle buses go to that shopping center but not to the main post office. I really like the little post office at the other end of the shopping center. The line is never as long as the one at the post office on Broadway and there is more parking. The old Long's on California used to have a terrific mailing center but now it is just a side gig for the harried photo department.

I agree with you, Deborah. Such a shame for the Rossmoor folks. The Broadway parking lot is already such a mess, not to mention downright dangerous, at times. I can't imagine directing more traffic to that location.
