Disc Golf Course Opens In Walnut Creek

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday morning for the 9-hole course

The city's first disc golf course was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday morning.

The 9-hole course is located in the back half of Walden Park, 2698 Oak Road.

Disc golf is played much like regular golf except players toss differently designed discs instead of hitting a ball with a club.

The object is to get your disc into an elevated basket in the fewest number of throws.

The Walden Park course cost $5,000 to build. It was put together with volunteer labor. The final push was on Community Service Day last month.

On Friday afternoon, two groups were playing on the course as well as one individual.

Richard Ortega, a 1979 Northgate High graduate who now lives in Oakland, was trying out the course with his bag of discs.

He's been playing the game since college and likes the challenge it brings as well as the chance to get outdoors in a nice setting.

He said he was pleased to see a disc course in Walnut Creek and plans to play here when he's in town.

The course is free to use and is open to the public during daylight hours.
