Patch Map: Where Seniors and Others Can Keep Cool in the Heat Wave

Here are some things you can do to help keep comfortable and safe when the thermometer gets high.

by Jim Caroompas

Rain and cool weather are yesterday's new. This week, forecasters are calling for high temperatures, even up into triple digits.

That's good news for sun worshippers, swimmers, and sports fans. But for the rest of us, excessive heat can be uncomfortable. And for some of us, it can be downright dangerous. Those with respiratory troubles, cardiac problems, and diabetes can be at risk for heat stroke and other problems. Also, as the body ages, its internal thermostat goes higher, so the elderly need to be particularly careful.

Here are some tips from the Contra Costa Area on Aging:

  • Sip water all day long, even if you're not thirsty;
  • Keep the windows open, but the shades and blinds closed;
  • Use the air conditioner--if you don't have one, see the list of cooling centers in the county, or go to a supermarket, movie theater, or other place where there is air conditioning;
  • Keep electric lights turned down or off;
  • Go easy on physical activity;
  • Take tepid showers or baths;
  • Wear loose fitting, light colored apparel;
  • Avoid heavy meals.
What are you planning to do to cool off this week?
