Mount Diablo Beacon On Its Way To The Repair Shop

A beacon that has lit up the top of Mount Diablo for decades has been lifted from its perch.

The beacon, also known as the Eye of Diablo, was lifted off the top of the mountain's summit building on Tuesday.

It's being sent to the repair for a much-needed overhaul.

Save Mount Diablo is overseeing the rehabilitation project. The organization hopes to have the beacon repaired by Dec. 7 for its annual Pearl Harbor Day lighting.

Save Mount Diablo officials announced last summer they were spearheading the Beacon Restoration Project.

They expect the cost to be $100,000. The group only needs to raise $12,000 more, thanks in large part to matching grants by the Dean & Margaret Lesher Foundation.

Shell Oil donated the crane used in Tuesday's operation.
