Traffic Nightmares for Walnut Creek as PG&E Tests Pipelines

Summer is a great time to relax, enjoy barbeques and outdoor festivals, swimming pools and family time. But for Walnut Creek residents, summer is going to mean traffic jams and delays as well.

PG&E is conducting a series of tests on its underground pipelines this summer. Water will be forced through the pipes at high pressure to make sure the pipes are in good working order. A pipeline rupture in San Bruno in September of 2010 left eight people dead and 32 homes destroyed.

To prevent future disasters, PG&E is conducting safety tests on its major pipelines, and the Walnut Creek area is the subject of these tests this summer. Expect major delays on Ygnacio Valley Rd., Locust St. and Olympic Blvd.

PG&E says the smell of gas might be detected in the areas where work is being done. Also, most residents will have no interruption of their gas service during the project.

PG&E officials say work will begin this month and continue through September. So take a deep breath and plan to be annoyed.
