Who Lives In Walnut Creek?

Latest Census Bureau data provides us with a glimpse of Walnut Creek according to age, income and ethnicity

If you are white, about 47 years old, have a college degree and earn about $83,000 per year, then you are typical Walnut Creek resident.

The latest Census figures released by the state Department of Finance provide updated statistics on who lives here.

The figures estimate that 64,515 people now live in Walnut Creek. When the city incorporated in 1914, about 500 people lived in town.

The median age for Walnut Creek residents is 47.3. That does include people who live in Rossmoor.

About 73 percent of Walnut Creek residents are white, 12 percent are Asian, 10 percent are Hispanic or Latino and 1.7 percent are black.

About 97 percent of Walnut Creekers have at least a high school diploma. About 11 percent of the population has just that high school diploma, 18 percent attended college without getting a degree, 6 percent have associate degrees, 36 percent have bachelor's degrees and 24 percent have graduate degrees.

It lists the labor force at 33,051 with 30,780 of them employed. That produces an unemployment rate of 4.2 percent.

The median household income is $83,419 a year. The annual per capita income is $51,754.

Compared to our neighbors to the west, Walnut Creek is relatively poor.

Lafayette's annual median income $136,000, Orinda is $162,000 and Moraga, even with some St. Mary's College students in the mix, is $119,000.
