'You Know You're From Walnut Creek When …'

Facebook page brings back memories from days of yore.

Do you have a memory of going to GEMCO for back-to-school supplies? You recall when traffic was light enough for a four-way stop sign at Ygnacio Valley, Walnut Avenue and Bancroft? What was your favorite pie at Pinky's Pizza?

If these memories evoke sights and sounds and smells, take a look at the "You know you're from Walnut Creek when …"  Facebook page, which lets you indulge in nostalgia to your heart's content.

I remember (actually no so many years ago) when Walnut Creek had a large surplus in the bank and took great pride in not having problems with a balanced budget. We were leaders in the state as one of the first cities to go on a two years budget cycle. Staff was paid, police officers were at full force, roads were in good order, streets were swept every week, parks were well maintained and downtown was filled with interesting locally owned stores in and out of Broadway Plaza and you could find as place to park that was within a short distance of your destination. Sound like heaven? It was before a greed mentality took over and 'we' decided that our town had to be 'world class'. Sometimes progress isn't!!!

I remember when prop 13 went through in the late '70's, and suddenly there were no school buses, and public schools were closing right and left. My daughter was in fifth grade, we had just moved to the area, and first the one on Mohr Lane closed, Bancroft didn't have room, (although it was closest,) and finally, San Miguel let her enter, which subsequently shut down soon after!

The $42 million library sucked that surplus right out of your general fund. Alas, building something new on your way out of office leaves in its wake a legacy..... or infamy.

I remember Gemco! And I remember when you could see Mount D from downtown. Not any more. :(
