Diablo Theatre Company Receives $56,000 Gift from Late Walnut Creek Woman

The late executive secretary who died in January wanted to show her support and appreciation for the arts.

A Walnut Creek woman has bequeathed $56,000 to the Diablo Theatre Company for what her nephew says was “an expression of support and appreciation for the arts .”

Fred Wedeberg, a financial planner in the state of Washington, said he was not surprised when his aunt, Madeleine Neal, listed the donation in her will.

“The arts were a wonderful part of her life,” Wedeberg recalled.  “She and her late husband enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the world, enjoying dining out and always including the arts, particularly musical theatre, as part of their social activities.”

Neal, a retired executive secretary for Montgomery Ward, died in January of 2010.  She was 79.

“Our board is currently reviewing this generous gift to determine how the funds will be used according to her wishes,” said Gia Solari, Diablo Theatre Company’s producing director. “It demonstrates that estate gifts are a wonderful way to ensure the continued success of the arts and particularly Diablo Theatre Company’s musical productions and Performing Arts Academy.”
