The film tells the story of the Dervaes family who began running an organic farm in the heart of urban Pasadena in 1995.  On a one-tenth of an acre city lot, the family grows and sells seasonal, locally grown vegetables, herbs, fruits and edible flowers; unique heirloom varieties are their specialty.  The farm focuses on quality produce, rather than quantity.  Clients are primarily upscale restaurants and caterers in the Pasadena area although individuals can purchase produce on an appointment basis.

In 2006, Dervaes Gardens received a Greenopia Guide FOUR LEAF award in recognition of its commitment to sustainability and green practices, thereby placing it in the top 10% of Los Angeles area businesses.

The Slow Food Movement was founded in Italy in 1989 to promote local farming and rapidly expanded to more than 130 countries internationally. Its goals of sustainable foods and promotion of local small businesses are paralleled by a political agenda directed against globalization of agricultural products.

The local Slow Food chapter is comprised of residents in the Sacramento Delta and Mt. Diablo area who believe in the sustainability of the local food and are committed to honoring the area’s agricultural heritage.
