The American Scene: New Deal Art, 1935-1943 (Exhibit)

The American Scene: New Deal Art, 1935-1943, celebrates the 75th anniversary of the launching of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the largest New Deal agency employing millions to carry out public works projects. The agency's Federal Art Project put thousands of artists to work creating more than 200,000  works of art.

The American Scene features paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, and photographs depicting home and farm, city and factory life, landscapes, and the American people at work and play. These were created by more than 65 artists--including some from the Bay Area--who found work with the Federal Art Project during the Great Depression.

The Bedford's new exhibition showcases artworks (borrowed from several WPA repositories) that have been out of the public eye or in storage since the 1940s and later.
