Sunday Singalong - In My Life

This song signaled a new era for the Beatles, hinting at the melodic and lyrical innovations that were to come.

Yesterday (Dec. 8) was the 32nd anniversary of the assassination of John Lennon, so this week I thought it would be appropriate to feature one of his most iconic and tender songs.

"In My Life" was featured on Rubber Soul, the 1966 album that hinted to the world that the Beatles were about to depart once and for all from being a pop band of cuddly moptops writing love songs to screaming girls. Instead, they would focus on writing songs that broke through the boundaries of popular music and explore new frontiers musically and lyrically.

"In My Life" was written by Lennon (though it is, as all Beatles songs, credited to Lennon/McCartney). It is on the surface a love song, but it has depth and intensity that typical love songs do not. He recalls other loves, "some are dead and some are living," with a reflection and maturity we hadn't seen before in Beatle songs. It's as if he's singing, not to a girl, but to someone or something he has yet to find, something that will live at the center of his life.

Musically, it has a melodic approach that is also more mature and innovative than a standard pop song of the day. It is evocative and spare, and the piano solo in the middle, by producer George Martin, adds an interesting Baroque quality that is somehow just right.

This song is for me a prayer, a plea and a comfort. I hope it brings you at least a smile.

Thank you, Jim. This is definitely a comfort on a nostalgic day in December, which would have been my dad's 57th birthday. So, I'm remembering two of my heroes.

Jim, You make some great choices. The Beatles, musically are still the Giants of Modern Music. I believe that music is the Universal language (not Esperanto!) and that "Music is the Message". The Beatles are a Large part of why the Sixties and Seventies were a turning point in America and elsewhere. They unified so many people and gave rise to a conciousness that is somewhat lacking today. Can anyone listen to just one Beatle song? Its hard to do. The Beatles explored new musical territories and took us along with them...

Chem trails ... You tube..

The trails I saw at you tube, while bigger than vapor trails, were still very puny compared to theRead More banner cloud formations I saw this, banners stretching straight from East to West (or vice versa) from one horizon to the other. May guess is that they were over 500 feet wide, and I'm still inclined to think the straight-line winds that made the derecho in the East pushed backwards a straight banner of visible water vapor (ie, clouds). Compare the physics to the x-rays that are pushed backwards when matter is sucked into the spiral of a black hole, a new discovery this week.

Thanks, Jim. I appreciate it. Hi Julio, As we all know, Even the late movie guru, Roger Ebert'sRead More fans, sometimes, did not agree with his assessment. This is the beauty of a filmic conversation. There is really no right or wrong. It is highly subjective. Even Rotten Tomatoes sometimes do not agree with Top Critics from around the world.
