East Bay Unemployment Nudges Up Slightly

The region did produce 6,300 new jobs in October

The East Bay's unemployment rate bumped up one-tenth of a percent in October, according to figures released by the state Employment Development Department.

The jobless rate was 7.0 percent in October, compared to a revised 6.9 percent in September. In October 2012, the East Bay unemployment rate was 8.5 percent.

Contra Costa's jobless rate was 6.9 percent while Alameda County was 7.0 percent.

Walnut Creek's unemployment rate is listed at 4.6 percent.

Despite the slight increase in the jobless rate, the East Bay produced an additional 6,300 jobs in September. The work force is now at 997,100. It did top 1 million jobs earlier this year.

Government jobs increased by 3,900, most of those coming in the public school sector.

Trade, transportation and utilities added 1,400 jobs, most of those from the retail sector.

The construction industry lost 300 jobs, most of that attributed to seasonal layoffs.
