Parking Meters Appearing In Some Walnut Creek Garages

Parking garage owners say the garages are still mostly free and the meters are designed to encourage workers to park elsewhere

Parking meters are starting to pop up in garages in downtown Walnut Creek that had previously been free for drivers.

The meters appeared last month at Plaza Escuela near the Cheesecake Factory and may soon show up in other garages not owned by the city, according to a story in the Contra Costa Times.

The city-owned garages still charge 50 cents an hour. The meters are $2 an hour.

The owners of the parking garages told the Times that 85 percent of their facilities are still free. They said the meters are designed to encourage downtown employees to park on upper levels to leave the ground level spaces to shoppers.

At a retreat on Friday, city officials are scheduled to discuss a plan to raise the fee for downtown on-street parking meters from $1 to $2. The proposal could come before the City Council in December, the Times reported.
