Protesters Gather At Chick fil A Opening in Walnut Creek

Gay rights proponents and anti-gay protesters lined the sidewalk outside of the new North Main eatery, while patrons came and went.

It was a day that has been delayed for two months now -- the opening of Chick fil A at 2750 North Main St. Due to Chick fil A president Dan Cathy's remark last summer that opposed same sex marriage, groups that support gay marriage have organized protests, and those who support Cathy's position have done the same.

But Thursday's opening in Walnut Creek was relatively uneventful. Crowds seemed more intent on getting lunch than making a political statement. On the sidewalk, about a dozen gay rights activists stood with banners, bullhorns and signs, urging passing traffic to honk in support of their cause.

Meanwhile, on the other side of driveway, four men held anti-gay signs and shouted at the activists to "leave your $%*#ing hands off my children."

One customer who was on her way out of the store stopped at the driveway and rolled down her window, addressing the anti-gay activists.

"You're not helping your cause, you know," she said.

"Do you have children?" one of the protesters asked. "They are the target of these people." The woman drove away.

Meanwhile, a spokeman for Chick fil A named Josh, who said he was from the store in Sacramento, was asked about all the ruckus in the driveway.

"All I can say is that we'll serve anybody. We don't care who they are," he said.

If the gay activist are so bold to express their opinions in public while disrupting lunch for people; why don't they serve a long side their gay conrads in arms in Afgahnistan and fire a weapon at the real enemy.

The statement "Due to Chick fil A president Dan Cathy's remark last summer that supported marriage between a man and woman..." perpetuates the absurd myth that those who support same-sex marriage are somehow against marriage between a man and a woman. People were upset with Mr. Cathy due to his statement denigrating same-sex marriage, not due to any comments regarding marriage between man and a woman. The author of this article surely knows this perfectly well. Those who support same-sex marriage have no designs whatsoever against opposite-sex marriage. They merely seek equal rights for those who love a memeber of the same gender. Equal rights are certainly not "special rights." They are the same rights everyone else enjoys.

@Craig,
You are absolutely correct - in my haste to post the story, I wrote an ill-considered sentence. I have since changed the sentence to read "opposed sex marriage." Thanks for the feedback and catching that important difference.

The more of this idiocy we keep having, the more it gets old and tired and the more likely that same sex will be accepted. Please keep it up. As Gandhi said:
"First they ignore you. Then then laugh at you. Then they fight you. and then you win."

The anti-gay activists sound like real mouth-breathers.

Went there for lunch yesterday. No protestors of any stripes were there. Despite long lines, that place is shockingly efficient. Very impressive system they have. Plus tasty food.
I wish the key shareholders weren't fundies-- but mostly because they then might stay open on Sundays. Maybe the In-N-Out family can provide Mr. Cathy some Biblical analysis to justify their "no day of rest" policy. In any event, if I made purchase decisions based on politics, I would have very very limited choices.

The protests were on Thursday. I picked up my new car across the street from there and that's when I saw them.

I find it so odd that the anti-gay demonstrators equate homosexuality with pedophilia. The recent revelations about the Boy Scouts' secret files should have laid that misconception to rest. It's people who are deeply in the closet about their sexuality that we should fear (and who need help) -- not those who advocate for equal rights.

The gentleman interviewed in the attached Patch clip was a US Senate candidate but lost in the June primary. He's out there. On a planet. All his own.

Chem trails ... You tube..

The trails I saw at you tube, while bigger than vapor trails, were still very puny compared to theRead More banner cloud formations I saw this, banners stretching straight from East to West (or vice versa) from one horizon to the other. May guess is that they were over 500 feet wide, and I'm still inclined to think the straight-line winds that made the derecho in the East pushed backwards a straight banner of visible water vapor (ie, clouds). Compare the physics to the x-rays that are pushed backwards when matter is sucked into the spiral of a black hole, a new discovery this week.

Thanks, Jim. I appreciate it. Hi Julio, As we all know, Even the late movie guru, Roger Ebert'sRead More fans, sometimes, did not agree with his assessment.
