1968 Exhibit: What Went Wrong With Baby Boomers

Patch editor David Mills discussed the "1968" exhibit at the Oakland Museum and how it makes clear why the Baby Boomer generation is messed up.

If you want to know why the Baby Boomer generation is unstable, just visit the "1968" exhibit at the Oakland Museum.

The exhibit, which now runs through late November, is an interesting collection of events, fashion and memorabilia from 1968.

It's a display that's well put together and gives viewers a good glimpse of what that traumatic year was like.

It also shows how that violent, fragmented, fast changing and colorful 12 months shaped and in some instances warped the Baby Boomers.

The news events alone were enough to shatter any generation.

The year began with the Tet offensive in Vietnam, one of the bloodiest conflicts of that divisive war. This was also the year where the most soldiers were killed in that Southeast Asian nation. On average, more than 1,000 young Americans died each month there in 1968.

This part of the exhibit is punctuated by a Huey helicopter that was used in Vietnam. Inside the chopper, video plays with actual footage of the fighting and interviews with soldiers who were there.

You walk a few feet away and you can watch another video, this one about the assassination in April 1968 of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. The video shows the events leading up to the murder as well as the riots that followed.

In another corner are artifacts from the June 1968 assassination of Sen. Robert Kennedy while he was running for president. He was shot in the head on the night he won the California primary. There are dishes from the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles where the shooting occurred as well as photos and a video of Kennedy's funeral train, a film most Baby Boomers probably can't watch for more than a minute or so.

Next stop is the explosive Democratic National Convention in August, where riot police clashed with anti-war demonstrators on the streets of Chicago while inside delegates argued vehemently over who should be their presidential nominee. They chose Vice President Hubert Humphrey, who did not run in the primaries.

In November, the Republican nominee, Richard Nixon, barely defeated Humphrey, in part because segregationist candidate George Wallace won a handful of Southern states.

Also during that year, the Black Panther movement grew in strength and feminists protested at the Miss American pageant. At the Olympics in Mexico City, two U.S. sprinters thrust up their arms in a black power salute while on the medal podium.

If all that wasn't enough, there were cultural changes unraveling.

Some of the exhibits display the colorful and revolutionary fashion shifts. Orange was a popular color that year. Short skirts and flowery shirts were part of the younger generation's statement that they were different than their parents.

Even the dishes, radios and stereo players were unique. Movies were becoming more violent and more sexually explicit. Space travel was expanding as we prepared to go to the moon.

Everything was questioned. Ground-breaking items could be found in every corner of society. The vast array of cultural shifts was too much, especially for a generation that was coming of age while it worried about going off to war and watched its political heroes get gunned down.

I'm convinced the Baby Boom generation never recovered from 1968. It's why we are the way we are.

We're still a generation that is adamant about its views, whether they are conservative or liberal. It's one of the reasons the country is now more divided than it's been since... well... 1968.

We're still trying to break new ground while we head into our sixties and seventies. We're still pretty self-absorbed and volatile.

And I believe you can trace a lot of it back to that 12 months of confusion and chaos that happened 44 years ago.

I don't plan to go anywhere. Spotty, random censorship is odd but it doesn't bother me.

Susan - W. Halverson is only telling the truth - the entitlement system we've set up is bankrupt, unsustainable. Call it the blame game but we've known it for 30 years. We've continued to elect officials, including Baby Boomers, without the spine to address it.
RWCook August 16, 2012 at 07:36 pm
No divisive Libs, wharfrat? Checked the White House lately? Crazy Ol' Joe (they'll put y'all back in chains) Biden? Harry Reid ? Nancy Pelosi? At least Ryan is willing to offer a proposal to solve the budget problems, and of course he's getting excoriated for it by elected officials that have not even passed a budget for going on 4 years...
Susan D.Keeffe August 16, 2012 at 08:07 pm
RW Cook,
These are good programs for all citizens regardless of political persuasion. We need to work together to ensure their solvability for future generations so our children will not face retirement with no medical benefits and no income if they have not been lucky enough to afford a 401K. Lets stop pointing fingers and work to fix things.

The Obama “lead from behind strategy,” in Libya proved America can participate and not dominate global affairs at the expenditure of American lives. Obama masterly allocated “back-drop” resources [mainly intelligence] to our allies in Europe and Mid-Eastern theater and the other guys did the brunt of the work for a change.
All the while Sen. John McCain screamed for American intervention. Even today, McCain screams for direct intervention with Syria. You would think a guy who spent 4 years in a POW camp would have enough time to figure out that war isn’t good for anything! Currently the buzz-phrase on the campaign trail is, “fundamental differences." The difference is Republicans’ want to over fund military spending at the expense of our nations’ social health and welfare. This is ridiculous- but not surprising. DOD has a multi-billion dollar business with private defense contractors and sub-contractors who in return provide jobs to millions of Americans. From a Republican stand point, war or even the thought of one is good! Until Democrats can convince the masses that peace is better and more profitable. I’m afraid we will always be caught in this Vietnam 1968 quagmire.

J.D.O'Connor,
I understand the motivation. And yes, trolls are irritating and annoying. But in America they have a right to be irritating, annoying and stupid. I think you are treading on the First Amendment even though I agree with your motivation and appreciate the attempt at keeping things at an intelligent level. We can always choose to ignore trolls, attempt to reason with them, etc. but in my opinion, that should be the readers' option. I'm normally on the Hercules Patch where literally anything goes. They printed this article and several of us thought it was worth commenting on. Let what's his name make a fool of himself - he has a right to do so.
J.D. O'Connor August 16, 2012 at 08:56 pm
Hey, Susan, and welcome to Lamorinda Patch. Thanks for the thoughtful post and I don't think you'll find a more committed advocate of the First Amendment... BUT you must also recognize that hate-speech, deliberately provocative comments, slanderous comments, and those designed to take a dedicated readership off topic is routinely stated as the NUMBER ONE reason people leave the site. We moderate, with what I am told is a light hand, and to keep the discourse here productive, informative and civil. That works for us, and we will continue the practice. Other sites, of course, may have different approaches.

Name calling and thread hi-jacking are the usual problems, and are least tolerated from quasi-anonymous posters such as myself because there is no accountability. JD is a reluctant censor, and from what I can tell, even-handed.
CJ August 16, 2012 at 09:26 pm
Whatever you are smoking , I think you should share your stash.
It is not fair to hallucinate in front of all of us.
CJ August 16, 2012 at 09:31 pm
JD censors Patch and his limits are very subjective. He has his favoites and will give them much more rope than others even when they clearly violate the Terms of use. Beware.
I come and go depending on the issue but lose interest when I see a post deleted due to tone and not necessarily content. Or am attacked personally, flag the post and nothing happens to the perp. Which is how I arrived at the subjective judement.
Susan D.Keeffe August 16, 2012 at 09:39 pm
JD,
Actually, I admit, there are times some of us have begged Laila, who does the Hercules Patch, to do some moderating! And I do know quite a few folks who just gave up as the cyber-bullying and trolls just can be intolerable. So, while I think even a careful thoughtful moderation is appreciated, I still think idiots have the right to post. Laila often posts interesting articles from other Patches and I think its great to get different perspectives. I'm thinking maybe you should communicate to her - the Hercules Patch Editor - and share your experiences moderating here.
Susan D.Keeffe August 16, 2012 at 09:44 pm
OOPS! Sorry - I meant cannot be tolerated. Hateful put-downs, name-calling, etc. from behind a pseudonym has driven many from that Patch. But moderation has to be very even-handed and I suspect that's kind of tricky. Otherwise, as noted by CJ, there can be a perception of favoritism.
J.D. O'Connor August 16, 2012 at 09:57 pm

Ian Lipnicky (still a SportsFan) August 16, 2012 at 11:22 pm
@MD - Vicky321 posted several comments with links to burberry coats. I think someone finally saw they were being spammed and deleted them.
David Mills (Editor) August 16, 2012 at 11:26 pm
Hi, SportsFan:
Thanks for noting the spam... Vicky321 has posted a number of these items on a number of sites. We've asked our techs to delete them and block this user at the IP server level
Jose August 16, 2012 at 11:36 pm
@SportsFan: Of course they were deleted. I made my post before they were deleted knowing that they would be deleted at any moment. This is not an unattended blog. My post might as well be deleted, but it does sort of make the point that this is not an unattended blog, and your desire to find fault is misplaced, at least until you show yourself to be a regular follower with some experience to pass judgment.
Ian Lipnicky (still a SportsFan) August 16, 2012 at 11:49 pm
MD - I find the moderation to be inconsistent. That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it. You are entitled to your opinion. JD is entitled to his, too. In fact, JD is entitled to much more. He can delete ANY comment he wants to. Neither he, nor Patch, owes anybody 1st Amendment protection since Patch is not a government website.
But, a comment thread hoping that a man gets run over by a subway train isn't funny. Yet, it's allowed. I find that inconsistent. JD doesn't. His vote trumps mine but it doesn't mean I'm wrong.
natalie johns August 17, 2012 at 01:04 am
How would you know what the moderation is here you've only been posting for the last 24 hours or so.
Jose August 17, 2012 at 01:08 am
sportsfan: good point regarding throwing people under the train. I find that offensive, but it was directed at an abstract person, not a patch contributor. Maybe that is sufficient reason to let it pass, maybe it isn't, we each have our own judgment on that. JD puts up with a lot of crap before he deletes. I defer to his judgment on this because without an editor it deteriorates into useless shouting. I don't have the perfect answer to what is free speech and what venues must allow everything short of "FIRE" in the theater.
Tim Davis August 17, 2012 at 01:18 am
*Sportsfan* made his first comment here two days ago. The *comments* are all over the map yet he finds the moderation here *inconsistent.* Sorry but I smell a troller. Check out his profile.
CJ August 17, 2012 at 02:00 am
JD- I disagree. I am certain that one individual who you and I know who it is, whined and complained and a couple of times I'll admit to stepping over the line. But then I flag a viciously personal attack post by said individual and ........crickets. Just saying. Seems a little arbitrary. That person fits your politcal outlook , I don't. Just don't get so offensive when you get called out for it.
lovelafayette August 17, 2012 at 02:48 am
This is a very powerful important exhibit that brought tears to my eyes, so good it has been extended until November. I agree 1968 established core values for many of us, on both sides of the aisle and street. A good exhibit to share with the family, a good way to explain yourself to your kids. And don't forget to listen to the music.
Ian Lipnicky (still a SportsFan) August 17, 2012 at 11:50 am
Replying to the multiple attacks would be a violation of the commenting policy since it's off-topic. Old-timers are advised to read the commenting policy.
Publius August 19, 2012 at 08:32 pm
JD, I have been censored on other Patch sites for the most banal of commentary that must somehow just not fit the "agenda".
However, I have seen the most offensive, vitriolic, vituperative posts be allowed to stand unchallenged by the moderator. This makes no sense to me.
J.D. O'Connor August 20, 2012 at 12:21 am
@CJ -- Sorry, but you can't be more wrong. Trying to save you from yourself here, but if you're not buying it, you're not buying it. It should be plain to see that while most of the posts we see at Lamorinda Patch are well-written and civil, a few are not and, yes, they are stricken. And will continue to be stricken. Claiming that you've been singled out for my attention because of my political leaning is offensive and repeatedly calling me a censor as opposed to a reluctant moderator may make you feel better, but also is nowhere near the truth.

Chem trails ... You tube..
inquiring mind June 15, 2013 at 02:22 pm
The trails I saw at you tube, while bigger than vapor trails, were still very puny compared to theRead More banner cloud formations I saw this, banners stretching straight from East to West (or vice versa) from one horizon to the other. May guess is that they were over 500 feet wide, and I'm still inclined to think the straight-line winds that made the derecho in the East pushed backwards a straight banner of visible water vapor (ie, clouds). Compare the physics to the x-rays that are pushed backwards when matter is sucked into the spiral of a black hole, a new discovery this week.
