Four Injured In Rossmoor Bus Accident

The cause of the late morning accident is under investigation.

Four people were injured and a power pole damaged late this morning when a bus driver lost control of his vehicle and hit a power pole. All four passengers on the bus were taken to the hospital, though the extent of their injuries are not yet known, according to Maureen O'Rourke, senior manager of communications services at Rossmoor.

"The bus landed on a grassy area inside the gate," she said. "Traffic was backed up quite a bit as a result of the accident."

She said the power at the gate went out at first, rendering the gates and the guardhouse computers useless until the generators kicked in. Even after that, she said the traffic was backed up for several hours while an outbound lane was opened for inbound traffic.

"It was quite a mess there for a while," she said.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident. The driver was not injured in the crash.

I assume this was the Rossmoor Van. The CCCTA Bus Route 1 goes between the Rossmoor Shopping Center and WC BART, hourly, and is much safer.

THIS IS AN ALARM TO REMIND ROSSMOOR GRF,THAT THERE MUST BE OTHER ACCESSES & EXITS READY AND ABLE TO ENSURE SAFE FLOW OF TRAFFIC IN SUCH CASES AS WELL AS A MONUMENTAL DISASTER..ANOTHER ENTRANCE AND EXIT SHOULD BE AS AVAILABLE ON A REGULAR BASIS. I AM SUPRISED THE CITY OF WALNUT CREEK HAS NOT MADE A REQUIREMENT OF ANOTHER 24/7 ENTRANCE AND SECURITY GATE..7000 PEOPLE LIVES ARE AT RISK..THIS NEED SHOULD NOT BE SHELVED FOR FUTURE REFERENCE,BUT IMPLEMENTED ASAP. My prayers for everyone to return safely to their homes.

I agree. While this time people were only inconvenienced, a similar incident in the future could be tragic. A backup gate that can be kept locked unless needed for contingencies should be the way to go. I'm sure the HOA at Rossmoor wants to keep costs low so keeping it locked and unmanned until circumstances require it would be the way to go. Plus, it would be a lot less expensive than defending a lawsuit and possibly paying out if they lose. Of course, any loss would be tragic but HOA "bean counters" tend to focus on costs and risks.

Great response compared to other negative comments - people always looking to complain!

I would say this is an example of an appropriate time for concerned residents to speak out. To call it complaining is dismissive. I thought that people were supposed to participate in their neighborhood plan.

Start by electing a city council that will pay attention to the safety of Rossmoor and its residents. The candidate forum showed genuine concern about this issue from candidates like Barry Grove and Justin Wedel. Bob Simmons a little less so. Loella Haskew basically told Rossmoor residents you are getting enough already so be quiet. This is the party line of some current council members like Cindy Silva who simply say "trust us" and stop asking hard questions! Time for some new ideas and fresh faces.

I think you mean 70,000 lives are at risk (NOT 7,000).

How did you come to the figure of 70,000 peiople in Rossmoor? I think there may be 10,000 units but surely there aren't 7 people living in each one. I know we have support personnel but no where near the numbers that have been mentioned.

Actually, there are approximately 6,500 units and 9.500 residents.
