Highway 24 Gathering Shows Its Colors; Commuters Honk Their Support

Internet traffic heats up as residents write to talk about the country's successful military action against Osama bin Laden.

Flags popped up Monday as residents sought a suitable outlet for a national agony that has consumed us for the last 10 years. There was also talk of a gathering at the El Curtola Blvd. overpass in Lafayette near Walnut Creek.

"I went to the overpass in 2002 and 2004," said Walnut Creek resident Michael Musich. "I went again in 2008 and remember thinking 'we're already starting to forget.'"

Word seemed to be spreading Monday about a gathering at the overpass commencing at 5 p.m.., and four American flags that had been lashed to the chain link fencing there were quickly joined by others.

Marin County firefighter Len Walton, out at the overpass earlier in the day, told a cruising Patch photographer to "come back tonight, there's going to be a party."

And several people were on hand as the sun began to fall Monday, gathering at the El Curtola overpass to wave their flags and wave at commuters - who honked in an automotive show of support. Retired New York firefighter Sean Hickey joined the group, raising a clenched fist at the end of the day before carefully folding his flag and walking away.
