Metering Lights To Be Activated On Interstate 680

The lights will begin Monday on the busy freeway between Pleasanton and Santa Clara County.

Metering lights will be turned on Monday along a busy section of Interstate 680.

Meters will be activated for 15 on-ramps along southbound I-680 from Stoneridge Drive in Pleasanton to the Highway 237 interchange in Santa Clara County.

Caltrans will set the lights to green on Monday to alert motorists to the new devices. They will stay green all week.

The following Monday, the lights will be switched to a red-green cycle each weekday during peak commute hours, 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The metering lights are an attempt to facilitate faster travel times along the corridor. Last fall, the carpool lane between Highways 84 and 237 was converted into an carpool lane.

The switch increased highway delays as motorists merging onto the freeway attempted to move across several lanes of traffic to reach the express lane.
