Walnut Creek Population Grew By 0.6 Percent Last Year

New state report shows Walnut Creek population grew by several hundred in 2012

Walnut Creek's population edged up by 0.6 percent last year.

Figures released by the state Department of Finance show Walnut Creek added about 300 residents, increasing its population to 65,684 as of Jan. 1.

Walnut Creek is the fifth largest of Contra Costa's 19 incorporated cities. It's similar in size to Pittsburg.

Concord is the largest city in the county with more than 123,000 people. The smallest city is next door in Clayton, which has slightly more than 11,000 people.

Contra Costa County's population grew by 0.8 percent last year to 1,074,072.

Over in Alameda County, Dublin had the second highest growth rate in California with 6.8 percent.

California's population increased by 0.8 percent to 37,966,471.
