Butterflies Pay Tribute to Cancer Sufferers

Civic Park event was inaugural effort by Cancer Support Community Bay Area.

Hundreds of Monarch butterflies took flight in Civic Park in the Wings of Hope earlier this month.

The butterfly release takes note of those in our community who have been touched by cancer. The inaugural event put on by Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area, included a ceremonial butterfly release, fun kids activities and an interactive tribute wall. Guests were given the chance to reflect and honor those close to them who have been affected by cancer, by releasing a live butterfly in their name.

The following comes from a note written by the Cancer Support Community:

Erika, who attended the event, said, “It was a meaningful and lovely event.”

Shell, a cancer survivor, spoke during the program saying, “I felt very alone when I was out in the regular world, and Cancer Support Community really was my refuge.”  Cancer Support Community provides programs and services that enable cancer patients and their families to manage their treatment and recovery as effectively as possible, increase their chances for survival, and provide for a higher quality of life. Anyone affected by cancer is welcome, and all of their services are always free of charge.  Events like Wings of Hope are what Cancer Support Community is all about, bringing our community together in a way that is truly meaningful, and honoring those touched by cancer.

Wings of Hope would not have been possible without its many sponsors.  Janice Hoss of John Muir Health said, “John Muir Health and Cancer Support Community have been longstanding community partners for over 20 years, and we appreciate the opportunity to be the Presenting Sponsor of this unique event.”  One hundred percent of the proceeds of this event will directly underwrite the services for numerous cancer patients and their families in our community.

Generous sponsors of this event included:

  • John Muir Health
  • Diablo Valley Oncology/Hematology
  • Broadway Plaza
  • Contra Costa Oncology
  • Mt. Diablo Solano Oncology Group
  • Tootsies – Rockridge
