Dig Earth Day Activities for Open Space

City has service projects, picnic, environmental education and a campfire program Sunday.

The city of Walnut Creek is inviting residents to share Earth Day activities, community service and fun in the city's Open Space.

The projects are listed below on Sunday, April 22.

The following comes from a city news release:

The day begins with service projects in three Open Space areas. At Sugarloaf volunteers will be transplanting native plants in the Open Space and clearing vegetation. Additional clearing along a creek bed will be done as time permits. Howe Homestead will be doing a variety of tasks from cleaning the creek bed to creating wells around trees and doing other landscaping jobs around the park and Community Garden. The Shell Ridge project will be to landscape a hillside at Hanna Grove Picnic Area to correct erosion problems and highlight native plants found in the Open Space.

Projects begin with sign-in at 9:00 am and the groups will work until noon. We have projects for all ages and families are encouraged to volunteer together. Pre-registration is required. Information will be sent to all registered participants with meeting locations.

Bring your family and picnic basket to the Hanna Grove picnic area at Shell Ridge at 12:00 noon for a community picnic. We will be celebrating the volunteer spirit of Walnut Creek and the opportunity to spend the day together in nature. The city will provide dessert and refreshments. Registration is required.

Environmental education activities for children will be conducted at Howe Homestead on Walnut Boulevard from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. These activities will be appropriate for children ages six to twelve. Pre-registration is required.

We’ll finish up the day at Sugarloaf Open Space with a staff-led campfire program under the stars at 7:00 p.m. No registration is required.

We’re planning a full day with something for everyone as we celebrate the 2,726 acres of the Walnut Creek Open Space. For more information on Earth Day activities and to register for any of the day’s activities please contact the Ranger staff at dollard@walnut-creek.org.
