Ducklings Arrive in Time for Mother's Day

Volunteers watching hatchlings on Walnut Creek's urban creeks.

Ten wood ducklings are celebrating Mother's Day weekend on San Ramon Creek in downtown Walnut Creek.

The ducks hatched from a nesting box, and two other boxes have eggs that are about to hatch. "After the hatch boxes are cleaned and refilled with fresh bedding material," a second nesting might be in order, reported Brian Murphy — the same mom had two nestings last spring in the ravine off South Main Street, from which you can hear the whine of tires from Highway 680. Murphy is a volunteer with the Just For Ducks program of the Mount Diablo Audubon Society.

On nearby Tice Creek there are nine ducklings on the creek with a mom and another box of eggs about to hatch, Murphy said.

Earlier this week, Patch reported on a wood duck mom sitting on eggs in a nesting box. Thanks to Patch reader Paula Miller for asking for an update.
