Sprucing Up Saklan Indian Site at Rossmoor

This was another of the volunteer projects that was part of Walnut Creek's Community Service Day.

drew a lot of attention with the variety of projects — 42 of them — that volunteers signed up for.

One project delved into centuries-old history. A group of about 15 Rossmoor volunteers raked and spruced up a site at Rossmoor that has rock with mortar holes where Saklan Indians used to grind acorns, according to a Rossmoor News piece.

The tribe is believed to have occupied the site from the 1500s to the 1700s. The Saklans (or Saclans) were a constituent group of Bay Miwoks believed to inhabit what is now Walnut Creek and Lafayette.
