Water Main Roils Second Avenue Area

A water main broke Saturday night and flooded yards and garages in the area of Sheldon Court and Second Avenue.

Update, 12:15 p.m. Monday, information from EBMUD.

Yards and garages of about 30 residences in the Second Avenue and Sheldon Court area in northwest Walnut Creek were swamped over the weekend because of a water main break.

The area, a few blocks from Larkey Park, was cleaned up with no visible water or debris damage evident Monday morning.

The main break was reported around 10:35 p.m. Saturday, said East Bay Municipal Utilities District spokeswoman Abby Figueroa. An EBMUD crew was there around 11:00 p.m. Saturday to turn off the valve, she said. Out of service was a six-inch concrete line running down Second Avenue.

A crew began work on the problem between 12:30 and 1:00 a.m. Sunday, and water service was restored to 30 customers around 4 a.m., Figueroa said.

EBMUD workers had been in the area to work on a fire service line for the new Community of Christ sanctuary and congregation center that is being built on Second Avenue. EBMUD crews will be back on Second Avenue later in the week to restore that line to service, Figueroa said.

The cause of the water main break is unknown at this time, Figueroa said Monday morning. One person has called EBMUD Risk Management to report a claim, she said. The Risk Management number is (510) 287-0175.

Work continued Monday morning on the construction of the new church for the Community of Christ on Second Avenue.

A resident told ABC7 East Bay Municipal Utility District crews should have responded more quickly.
