Attacked for Telling the Truth About DeSaulnier’s Anti-Business Record

Meuser discusses DeSaulnier's anti-business voting record.

Last week Mr. Burkholder, an Oakley blogger, attacked me for reporting that the California Chamber of Commerce (CalChamber) reveals that DeSaulnier votes against business 87.3% of the time.

The Democrat Party has been in charge of the California Senate for the last 40 years. As such, the Democrats have controlled the legislative process concerning what legislation gets passed when it comes to regulations and taxes. What has been the result of 40 years of Democrat control of the legislative process? Most of us will agree that 40 years ago California had one of the best business climates and educational systems in the world.

Now California is enduring % unemployment/underemployment for the last 3.5 years according to U.S. Dept. of Labor U-6 report. Some might argue that California’s 20.3% unemployment/underemployment is former President Bush’s fault and has nothing to do with the California legislature. If that were the case, why has Chief Executive magazine ranked California the worst state to do business in for the last eight years in a row? If our 20.3% unemployment/underemployment were all based upon Bush, why does California continue to lose 4.9 corporations a week to other states? These corporations are taking good California jobs and are moving them elsewhere.

DeSaulnier has stated that California should be proud that we are the 9th largest economy in the world with 38 million people. However, I remember when California was the 5th largest economy in the world with 23 million people. This means that California’s productivity is declining even as the population is growing. This means that the standard of living is dropping in this state. It also means that California is not the golden state; it is the brass state for many people.

Mr. Burkholder did an excellent job of showing the numbers of how DeSaulnier votes against business each year. However, Mr. Burkholder’s erroneous conclusion that the CalChamber voting record favors Republicans lacks journalistic integrity. We must remember that CalChamber represents business. CalChamber’s mission is to educate its members on public policy issues that affect business. The CalChamber’s members are Democrats as well as Republicans. Business should not be a left or a right issue; it should be a California issue. Rather than claim that CalChamber favors Republicans, Mr. Burkholder should be looking at the bills that CalChamber is focusing upon each year and start holding our elected officials accountable for their anti-business votes.

Let’s take a few minutes to look at a few of the bills that reveal DeSaulnier’s anti-business values.

In 2007, DeSaulnier voted once with the Chamber’s position and 13 times against the Chamber. One of DeSaulnier’s anti-business votes was for AB 504 which forced employers to pay striking employees.

In 2008, DeSaulnier voted twice with the Chamber’s position and 13 times against the Chamber. One of DeSaulnier’s anti-business votes was for SB 974 which made California less competitive by increasing the cost of shipping goods by imposing a per-container tax for California’s ports.

In 2009, DeSaulnier voted twice with the Chamber’s position and 10 times against the Chamber. One of DeSaulnier’s anti-business votes was for AB 2 which increased health care premiums by establishing litigation as the only meaningful approach to resolve disputes over rescinding coverage.

In 2010, DeSaulnier voted three times with the Chamber’s position and 13 times against the Chamber. One of DeSaulnier’s anti-business votes was for SB 145, which he authored supported higher workman’s compensation by making the employer pay for disabilities that were not work related.

In 2011, DeSaulnier voted once with the Chamber’s position and 13 times against the Chamber. One of DeSaulnier’s anti-business votes was for SB 535 the “Cap and Trade” bill which opens the door for unlimited fees and taxes which hurt not only business but raise the cost of living for all residents.

Thus, between 2007 and 2011, the California Chamber of Commerce has identified 71 bills that they feel are important to business. DeSaulnier voted opposite of the Chamber 62 times or 87.3% of the time.

Mr. Burkholder was quick to argue that DeSaulnier was not the worst candidate each year when it came to business records. However, just because DeSaulnier does not have the absolute worst CalChamber record does not change the fact that DeSaulnier continually votes for job-killing legislation. Look at DeSaulnier’s voting record, not the political rhetoric.

Each year, the California Democrat controlled Senate has voted to create new boards and commissions that have continually expanded the size of California’s government. The size of California’s budget and the amount of control the government has over your life has grown out of control. In fact, California currently has about 519 different government agencies. Where do you draw the line? How much government is enough?

As for me, I believe that a smaller government is a better government. Our Founding Fathers rebelled against the tyranny of Great Britain because Great Britain continued to micromanage the affairs of the colonies. If elected to the California Senate, it is my goal to fight for the people, to fight for our California businesses, and to fight for our communities. A thriving California is again possible if we release the heavy burden of government and allow the people to innovate and bloom once again.

After reading the comments about the article Meuser wrote, I hear a deafening silence from his detractors. If Meuser is lying about the voting record of DeSaulnier, prove him wrong. Let DeSaulnier's supporters show us the error of Meuser's article.
All of the nit picking (is this supposed to be hyphenated?) on the finer points of grammar rather than proving Meuser wrong, leads me to believe he is correct because he is not refuted. Instead of taking the easy way of attacking the person, do the hard work and rebut his statements. Are companies really leaving the state over abortion, gay rights and religious issues? I have not heard of one company leaving the state over social issues. No, the reasons businesses leave the state are the issues of high taxes and onerous regulations.
DMcMahon August 30, 2012 at 04:51 pm
thank you Ceasar! The discourse here is out of control. People are passionate yet cant see the forest through the trees.
David Miller August 30, 2012 at 05:09 pm
I'm voting for Meuser. Status quo is not working as our state swirls down the drain.
Eastofthehills August 30, 2012 at 05:59 pm
I support some of them politics holding your nose and choosing the one with the least stench. I tend to be more libertarian in my views; smoke all the pot you want, marry fifty women if you can afford it, go watch all the porn you want. However my main issue with many liberal causes is that I am being asked to pay for other people's decisions; You want an abortion? go pay for it yourself, you don't have job and want to watch porn all day? hope you have rich parents or won the lotto. Want 20 kids? great hope you married doctor.
@Ron - It's easy to say run the state into the ground until you actually do it. You'd be like my hippie friends during the LA riots; first ones running to my house asking to borrow some guns and ammo for protection despite a lifetime of opposing gunownership and because the gunstores jacked up their prices. As soon as the state starts burning you'll come running to the fundies to fix it and paying them a pound of flesh. Personally I'd rather give them some tasty morsels like gay marriage via populist opinion while things are still ok and keep my ability to watch porn, go to strip clubs, not go to church on sundays, not pray in schools, not dress like a pilgrim, have no pro-creative sex, and drink like sailor when i feel like it.
Ian Lipnicky (still a SportsFan) August 30, 2012 at 06:07 pm
You might be ok with a senator who wastes time pursuing his religious agenda, but I'm not, especially one who's itching for a Supreme Court abortion challenge at taxpayer expense. Big government is big government, even when it's Republicans & they're pursuing your agenda.
Ian Lipnicky (still a SportsFan) August 30, 2012 at 06:10 pm
People & taxpayers will suffer if abortion is outlawed. It's a relevant issue. People said Prop 8 wouldn't pass. It did. CA is not as socially liberal as people like to pretend.
Chris Nicholson August 30, 2012 at 06:28 pm
Other than indulging your desire to cast a "principled" vote (which is NOT nothing, I admit), what is the basis for your presumed expectation that you (or the State as a whole) will be better off by electing the incumbent and potentially assting the Dems in achieving a super majority?
Eastofthehills August 30, 2012 at 07:31 pm
Meuser's abortion policies are irrelevent to his tax positions and business development positions. In reality his views aren't too far out of the thinking of the rest of the country and the rest of the state. California is unique in that it as enclaves or San Francisco and Los Angeles that because of their population densities are able to control the state. Talk to people 75 miles away from those enclaves and you will see a very different state. This country as a whole is taking a step to the right.
James Buckley August 31, 2012 at 05:46 am
Thanks, Ceasar, reading this blog is proof of the fall of California and the rest of the country in past years. When reading it from top to bottom you feel like a candidate for admission to Napa State Hospital. This state more than any other is like a runaway train waiting to leave the tracks at the first big curve. Don't know if it can be saved at this point. I am 63 years old and fear for the quality of life for my young grandson's future in America.
KFrances August 31, 2012 at 11:32 am
Congratulations on the blessings for your family. It's great that your family has had success adopting kids. It is honorable. Maybe I have it wrong. I was under the impression from acquaintances that it is very expensive with extensive paperwork and years of waiting to adopt a single infant in CA. I have not gone through the process personally. I do support services that support unwanted pregnancies which lead to unwanted children. In general, adoption is a win win.
Renae Wilber August 31, 2012 at 12:41 pm
Thanks KFrances!
The Homestudy was $500.00. I'm not sure what it would be now, but the Counties are not in business of making money on adoptions, they only want to find good homes for children in need, and I only wanted to have children, so it was indeed a win-win!!! :)

So.....anybody will do?
Jose August 31, 2012 at 07:49 pm
Mr. Meuser. I am sorry that you were attacked for telling the truth, but let that be a lesson to you. Never confront voters with the truth. Your truth. His truth. It don't matter.
Also. I know that you would swallow nails before saying it, but the grammatically correct adjective is "democratic", not "democrat". Small d, Big D, it don't matter.
Jose August 31, 2012 at 07:53 pm
It is these little insults that keep the feud so vibrantly alive. d e m o c r a t i c party.
I am not a member, but I know what it is called, and I know what democrat party means.
David Smith September 1, 2012 at 03:32 pm
Woe is California! Conditions won't improve until power is wrested away from the Democratic Party. I hope for its destruction.
James Buckley September 2, 2012 at 01:53 am
So right on David, sooner or later they will sink with their own unsubstainable ship due to progressive handouts to the large non working population in L A and the Bay Area that go to the mail box every month for their welfare checks and medical handouts. That non productive massive population always votes for the hand that feeds them. Funny I live in rural Plumas county and the last election results were 180 from the final results voted in,this being due to a rural county full of hard working retired baby boomers who paid taxes all their lives to support the mass of do nothings that are now registered to vote. This is the same reason nation wide that a substandard performer like Obama is so foolishly close in the polls to a sucessfull businessman that might put the country back on the right track. WOE is California and the rest of the nation as a whole. Only a conservative win in November would have a small chance to turn America back around to being what it used to be 40 years ago.
Trader Lu September 2, 2012 at 02:18 am
Renae, many times the right thing to do is not the easiest thing to do. Some women give up their children for adoption out of love for the child.
KFrances September 2, 2012 at 04:32 am
ILSF - Of course it's princi'ple' - typing too fast... and as usual with the snarky shut the conversation down .. can't see the forest throught the trees....and you're always good for a ....reminder of why we don't want to turn over California to bratty outsiders.
Grandma7 September 2, 2012 at 05:11 am
Happily voting for Mark!!!!!
KFrances September 2, 2012 at 05:13 am
througH the trees...hope you're geting a good laugh...ILSF...not a laughing matter...
and also Ron being Pro-Choice can be part of a religious belief that trumps everything also - as in pagan sacrifice...most people who have abortions don't realize this, but this is a part of the love of mother earth goddess Gaia - and it is a part of The Agenda for California - a return to biodiversity where humans are a problem - look it up - California is in an emergency crisis beyond a candidate's abortion stance. We have to balance the power in this State - it has been stolen by extremist outsiders who though AB32 and SB375 are implementing an expensive and costly plan of Eco-Techno-Fascist/Socialist destruction - the United Nations Agenda 21. It's real and it's being rolled out by the World Bank and printed money to the tune of 750 billion for the scam that is One Bay Area Plan.
KFrances September 2, 2012 at 05:27 am
Maybe it's good people still care enough to try to save this state and no we won't 'shutup' - while I agree labels tend to divide people and limit discussion, I understand why people are frustrated. I try to keep an open mind. Many 'journalists' here are educated and informed and we can learn a lot from each other outside the propoganda we get in the mainstream media. There is a wealth of unique experiences and education that can be shared so we can save this state.
David Smith September 2, 2012 at 11:04 pm
Totally agree, James.
KFrances September 3, 2012 at 01:01 am
@Caesar - I know this is becoming an older post now but I did want to say that I thought more about what you said and I completely agree with you...I just didn't like that you said 'shut up' - but we must get past labels in this country and really hear each other - you're right. Case in point - Occupy and Tea Party are in agreement on many issues but most of either group won't agree, because they haven't even listened to each other.
KFrances September 4, 2012 at 04:10 pm
DeSaulnier is anti-business (87+% of the time)
People need jobs. Mark Mueser will Save Jobs and help Save California.
Douglas Home September 4, 2012 at 06:34 pm
I don't care what Wikipedia says - it's the Democrat Party. You are a political party of Democrats. Would you call it the Republicanistic party? The Libertarianistic Party, The Communistic Party? Of course not.
It is yet another attempt to claim something of which you do not own (the exclusive right to the philosophy of Democracy). I know, let's call it "Democratic Redistribution."
Frank Mockery September 6, 2012 at 02:01 pm
Mark will have ample time to write right-wing op-eds after he loses his Senate bid by 25,000 votes ! Mark has so little support they hold his campaign rallies in a utility closet at the Blackhawk Country Club ! Even the BANG Newspapers said that this political neophyte lacks the experience necessary to handle this office while endorsing his opponent Senator Mark DeSaulnier for re-election this November ! Vote for State Senator Mark DeSaulnier this November further marginalizing the Republican minority in the Legislature !!!
Voter with an ID September 6, 2012 at 02:07 pm
Yes, by all means, Frank. Let's continue the dem majority in Calif. since it's worked out so well over the past 40+ years. At least we know who to blame for the mess this state has become. You must be very proud of your accomplishments.

Chem trails ... You tube..
inquiring mind June 15, 2013 at 02:22 pm
The trails I saw at you tube, while bigger than vapor trails, were still very puny compared to theRead More banner cloud formations I saw this, banners stretching straight from East to West (or vice versa) from one horizon to the other. May guess is that they were over 500 feet wide, and I'm still inclined to think the straight-line winds that made the derecho in the East pushed backwards a straight banner of visible water vapor (ie, clouds). Compare the physics to the x-rays that are pushed backwards when matter is sucked into the spiral of a black hole, a new discovery this week.
