Alamo Man Pleads Not Guilty In Murder Case

Michael Littman is charged in the killing of his neighbor, Doris Penico, during an altercation on a driveway between their two houses

Bay City News Service

An Alamo man has pleaded not guilty to murder charges for the death of his neighbor during a fight with her husband in August, according to a Contra Costa County prosecutor.

Michael Littman, 59, entered the not-guilty plea in a Walnut Creek courtroom on Thursday for allegedly striking and fatally injuring his neighbor, Doris Penico, also 59.

Around 11 a.m. on Aug. 27, Littman got into a physical fight with Penico's 55-year-old husband in the 3000 block of Stonegate Drive, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office.

During the fight, Littman reportedly knocked Penico down, causing her to hit her head on the ground.

She was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead from her injuries.

The Contra Costa County coroner's office have not yet released the results of an autopsy on Penico's body.

Littman was arrested three days after the deadly altercation and charged with murder and assault by force likely to cause great bodily injury.

The defendant and his alleged victim were engaged in an ongoing feud over property, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputy District Attorney Molly Manoukian, who is prosecuting the case, declined to comment on details of the murder investigation.

However, she said a judge today rejected Littman's request to return some of his property seized during a search warrant operation.

Littman's attorney, Michael Cardoza, did not immediately return calls for comment on the case today.

The defendant is set to return to court in Walnut Creek on Nov. 29 at 8:30 a.m.

The Littman's were recording everything to provide further evidence of the Penico's continued aggressive and erratic behavior. It's a terrible tragedy that should have never occurred but the Penico's are not innocent bystanders. The truth will come out in court, not only regarding Michael's innocence, but further information on Victor's abusive behavior towards both his neighbor's and his own wife. I'd think the reporters would dig a little deeper before printing such a one sided story, it's slander, something we all should take seriously since freak accidents happen everyday and if it were you, you would expect fair reporting of all the facts instead of having your name smeared in the paper prior to a conviction.

Leigh- are you the sister, daughter or girl friend of the accused? You have posted this exact paragraph on several different papers regarding this incident. The police have evidence that he physically struck two people, that is not an accident but a willful act unless he has been possessed. If the victim was also an abused wife, it still does not make it okay for someone else to harm her.

Actually that is the first comment I've left regarding this story whether you believe me or not. I am not related or in anyway associated with the Littmans, they don't know me. I'm not going to argue on here about what evidence they have or don't have, I just was surprised reading this article how one sided it was. We will just have to wait for the trial which will bring some answers, that is unless he takes a plea deal since this is just a horrible accident that has been made into a whole lot more.

Not seeing how this story is one-sided. He reported from the sheriff's office, tried to contact both the D.A. and the defendant's lawyer. I wonder how Leigh Watts 'knows' that "this is just a horrible accident,,," Was s/he there? Did s/he participate in the horrible accident? Or is s/he omniscient? If the latter is the case, please provide next week's lotto numbers lol!!

I know the Littmans and have seen evidence of Doris' erratic behavior. I am saddened for the Penicos, but I know the Littmans and the circumstances of this case and people should not be so quick to judge that what they do not understand. While it is terrible that Doris died, people should not be so quick to point blame at Michael.
