They could have pedaled right on past.
But instead a pair of cyclists stopped and organized a fight against a nascent brush fire along the Iron Horse Trail in downtown Walnut Creek Thursday afternoon.
Two cyclists were the first to the scene of a grass fire off Iron Horse Trail, today around 5:30 p.m.," wrote Patch reader Kristin Tennessen in an email. "Helpful residents of the adjacent apartment complex handed a lawn hose over the wooden fence, and a cyclist successfully put out the flames which had spread 15 feet wide. Due to teamwork and quick action, the fire was extinguished before the fire truck arrived."
The fire took place about a half-mile north of where the Iron Horse Trail crosses Mount Diablo Boulevard near Safeway, Tennessen said.
