Black Ice May Have Caused Monday Morning Crashes, CHP says

No injuries were reported in accidents near Pleasant Hill BART station.

By Bay City News Service — Black ice may be to blame for three traffic accidents that occurred Monday morning near the Pleasant Hill BART station, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

The CHP received a report of multiple vehicle accidents at about 7:40 a.m. on Treat Boulevard near Cherry Lane, CHP Officer John Fransen said. The first accident was a rear-ending, he said. The second occurred when a vehicle heading east on Treat went over the center median into the westbound direction and collided head-on with another vehicle, Fransen said. Another vehicle overturned after going over the center median.

There were no injuries in any of the incidents, Fransen said. Treat Boulevard was blocked for about 30 minutes before the CHP began reopening lanes.

The road was fully cleared at about 8:30 a.m. Runoff water from sprinklers in the area combined with the freezing temperatures might have created the black ice on the road, Fransen said.
