Community Safety and Crime Prevention Faire is Set for Sunday

Walnut Creek Police Department rolls out first such event with car seat clinic, child ID booth and a bike rodeo.

The Walnut Creek Police Department will put forth a lot more than an ounce of prevention at its first Community Safety and Crime Prevention Faire from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Sunday, Aug. 21 in the Civic Park parking lot across from City Hall.

And everything is free.

There will be a car seat clinic, a child ID and DNA kit booth, and a bike rodeo teaching bicycle safety. Kids should bring a bike and a helmet to participate in the latter.

"I got the idea from my counterpart in Vacaville," said WCPD Crime Prevention Coordinator Alicia Williams. "We don't have anything like this. We want the public to explore what we have to offer for public services."

It started with a child ID booth and "it grew bigger and bigger," said Williams.

K-9 Officer Joe Donleavy will be there with a canine colleague. Children (and big children) will have a chance to gape at WCPD's bomb truck and "The Bomb Robot." A fire engine and an ambulance will be on hand as well.

Look for representatives of the Community Emergency Response Team and Disaster Animal Response Team — or perhaps you know them as CERT and DART.

Bike helmets of different sizes have been donated by Children's Hospital in Oakland and Alameda/Contra Costa County Safe Kids. Downtown businesses are participating by donating backpacks and school supplies, said Williams.

The car seat clinic is by appointment only; please contact Sandy Mulligan at 943-5874.
