Concord Police Shoot Armed Man

Concord police issued a shelter-in-place order Monday morning in the neighborhood of Meadow Lane and Blackfield Drive. The order was lifted around 9:50 a.m., according to police.

Police shot a man who told them he was suicidal and armed with a gun, the Contra Costa Times reports. The man is Concord resident, around 40 years old, who had been at a home in the neighborhood Sunday in an apparently similar state, according to Lt. Andrew Gartner. Neighbors were alert to the possibility of his return to the area, and called police when he showed up again around 8 a.m. Monday.

The man was hysterical when police arrived, and two patrol units reportedly tried to control him without using excessive force. He refused to cooperate and the police fired a shot.

The man fled into a home after being shot and attempted to barricade himself, Gartner said. Police requested that residents of the area close their windows and remain inside for at least two hours, according to updates from Claycord.

A SWAT team was called to the residence around 9:30 a.m., and the man surrendered himself.

The man was detained and taken to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition.
