Crime & Safety

Creek Police Beat: A Paddy party pooper and a purse pilferer

Patch's ace Police Beat writer reads WCPD's bulletin every day—so you don't have to. Here, she summarizes a week's worth of crime trends, as well as the bad, sad, annoying and silly things that keep officers busy.

Here's what people were calling police about betwen March 17 and March 24:

Thursday, March 17

No business here: A homeless man with a bicycle was sleeping in front of the SPM Property office on N. Broadway. He asked to use the bathroom and was refused.

Paranoia's rampant: A person phoned police about seeing a stocky man with a beard who appeared to be casing the area at 8:36 a.m. The man turned out to be a PG&E employee who was checking meters. Another call came in from a resident on Doncaster Drive about the same man.

Another blow up: Yet another PG&E transformer blew up over on Geary Road and Buena Vista Avenue this morning at 10:42 a.m.

RIP, Shell Ridge steer: The animal was found dead in the open space this afternoon.

Scary encounter: A man had a knife pulled on him behind the downtown Safeway on the Iron Horse Trail at 9:30 p.m.

No to St. Paddy's Day: Creek Diva is as Irish as they get but she did not venture downtown on this festive holiday. Several fights and subsequent arrests occurred. A fight broke out at Tiki Tom's — one man broke his nose and several teeth. Another man was arrested after police say he smashed a car window and was in possession of cocaine. They don’t call it Rookie Night for nothing!

Friday, March 18

Are we having fun yet? And the fights kept rollin’ after midnight. Several more people were arrested for public intoxication, DUIs and assaults.

Ouch: An unlocked car on the 1500 block of Civic Drive was broken into at 2 a.m. An Apple laptop and iPhone charger were stolen.

Getting used to this: A catalytic converter was stolen from a Toyota truck on Gabriel Court.

Honest folks exist: Kudos to the citizen who turned in a wallet that was found in a bush on Giammona Drive. Another thank you to the person who turned in a black backpack downtown.

Saturday, March 19

Honda heist halted: A man was arrested on a charge of stealing a Honda on the 2400 block of N. Main Street shortly after midnight. Good job, WCPD!

Pay up, guys: A man was charged with fare evasion on Alpine Road at 2:23 a.m.

Trailer tapped: A landscape trailer was broken into overnight on Perada Drive. Another report came in that an unlocked Pod, bikes, wheels and tennis equipment were stolen.

Popular theft spot? Two cars were broken into on the 1700 block of Botelho Drive. What’s been going on over there lately? It seems like a hot area for thefts.

Shhhh: To the teenagers who are partying in the vacant house on Ebano Drive, heads up. The cops are on to you.

Keeping it in the family: A woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI and hit and run at 3:38 p.m. on Oak Road. Her brother was arrested a few hours later for obstructing an officer.

Smarter than a thief: An iPod Touch was stolen from a gym on Alma Avenue this afternoon. Creek Diva solved a similar crime when someone stole her neighbor's iPod at a local gym. Check Craigslist, that’s how Creek Diva nabbed the thief.

Honest folks, Part 2: Kudos to the citizen who found a wallet on Cypress Street. The rightful owner picked it up the next day.

Sunday, March 20

Time to sleep, OK? By 2 a.m., partiers on Lincoln, Walker and Trinity avenues were told to pipe down.

Jerk alert: To the driver of the green Nissan or Ford SUV, you hit several cars on Creekside Drive and took off. Shame on you.

Sticky stuff: A home on Caroni Court was TP’d overnight. Four cars were also TP’d, along with getting doused with ketchup and cinnamon.

Crime doesn't pay: Two men trespassed at a store downtown and stole two MP3 players, police say. They were arrested on separate felony warrants.

Monday, March 21

Prying eyes: The Peeping Tom of Trinity Avenue was seen in the area again. Police reminded the man not to return.

Don't hit: Police arrested a woman on a charge of hitting her 18-year-old daughter in the St. John Vianney Church parking lot at 8:45 a.m.

Trauma drama: Maybe it’s time to get that medical marijuana card, buddy. Marijuana was found on a trauma patient at John Muir Medical Center at 9:29 p.m.

Check those eyes: A caller phoned police after he or she saw a man “put a rifle in his trunk and appeared to be waiting for somebody.” Police determined it was a walking cane.

Know your neighbors: A caller was concerned about two young children playing on Covey Court. The two kids were playing because they had the day off from a school in San Ramon.

Frequent flier: A man named Peter, who seems to be arrested a few times a week in Walnut Creek, was arrested on several counts after a 14-year-old girl was approached by him.

Converter cribbed: A Toyota Tacoma was parked at the back of Las Lomas High School, and a catalytic converter was stolen in the middle of the afternoon.

Tuesday, March 22

Early morning fright: A resident on the 500 block of Marblehead Lane chased out a would-be intruder who was in the garage at 2:32 a.m.

It's a lock; use it: A garage was left open on Ellesmere Drive overnight and a mountain bike and Kirby vacuum were stolen.

Dastardly in the dark: Two businesses on Main Street and Cypress Street reported broken windows overnight.

Thanks for the ring: A concerned caller phoned police to say that the Liberty Bell at Liberty Bell Plaza was missing. The bell is being repaired by the city.

Not again: A purse was taken from a grocery cart at the downtown Safeway this afternoon. Do NOT leave your purse in your cart, folks!

Wednesday, March 23

High on hamburgers: A man crashed his white Jeep into a pole at McDonalds at 1:14 a.m. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Pipe down, Brits: Fresh & Easy is making some neighbors unhappy. A caller phoned police about a loud delivery at 6:09 a.m. An employee said that “neighbors agreed to noise for this day only due to the store opening.” Are you sure about that? Creek Diva reported something similar a few weeks ago.

Tragedy averted: A car in a church parking lot on Lacassie Avenue hit a pedestrian holding a 7-month-old. Only minor injuries were reported.

A Creek Diva first: A car on Ygnacio Valley Road and Civic Drive hit a turkey at 10:53 a.m. Animal control was called.

Thursday, March 24

Strange demand: A resident on Larkey Lane reported there was an intruder in his home around 9 p.m.. The intruder “came into his house and held a gun to his head making him call around to buy him drugs.” The caller was able to escape by going out a bedroom window. The suspect is still at large. No other description is available at this time.

Great city workers: With all this crazy wet weather, many calls came in about downed trees in the area. Thanks to the city workers who cleaned up various messes around town.

Metal mischief: Copper piping was stolen out of a vacant building on the 700 block of Bancroft Road.
