Creek Police Beat: Rossmoor Golf Carts the New Gotta-Haves for Thieves

Patch's ace Police Beat writer reads WCPD's bulletin every day—so you don't have to. Here she summarizes a week's worth of crime trends, as well as the bad, sad, annoying and silly things that keep officers busy.

Here's what people were calling the Walnut Creek police about Thursday, April 7, to Thursday, April 13:

April 7

Rolling crime: A Rossmoor resident homeowner reported that a green Yamaha golf cart with white leather seats was stolen from a home on 1100 Fairlawn Court. A short time later, another golf cart was found on a creek embankment and returned to the owner.

A real gelato jones: Someone reported seeing a man with an IV sticking out of his arm at the Gelateria Naia gelato store on North Broadway at 11:26 a.m. Police were unable to locate the man at the store. However, a man matching that description was seen running in traffic a short time later. He was advised to return to the hospital to have his IV removed.

Who am I? A student lost a passport and visa on Locust Street this afternoon.

Park 'n' punch: A cab driver reported that his cab was hit by another taxi attempting to park next to him on Rivera Avenue. He said the other driver “punched him in the stomach.” A report was taken.

Bags bagged: A man entered a business at Broadway Plaza about 8 p.m. and grabbed 11 purses valued at $4,000. He fled in a dark gray Chevy with paper license plates.

Friday, April 8

Rampant rolling crime: Another golf cart was reported stolen in Rossmoor. A blue Club Car was taken from a home on Stanley Dollar Drive sometime in the past three days. Later this afternoon, several more golf carts were reported stolen. Only one has been recovered.

Honda back home: Kudos to the Walnut Creek Police Department, which recovered a stolen Honda on Mission Lane. The car was released to the owner’s brother.

Smile and say, 'Busted': There was a report that a 19-year-old male wearing a red backpack stole a bottle of liquor from a business on the 600 block of Broadway. Police are checking the suspect's identity through a yearbook photo from a nearby school.

Saturday, April 9

Drink 'n' ditch: To the folks who ditched their bar bill at a North Main Street establishment: Police have your Arizona license plate number.

Drink at your own risk: Three men were arrested on the 1500 block of North Civic Drive, one on suspicion of public intoxication, another on a charge of assault and the third on suspicion of trying to fight in public. Four other individuals were arrested in separate incidents on suspicion of driving while under the influence.

Teen's ID used:  A father reported that his 13-year-old daughter's Social Security number was used illegally in Arizona.

Not the notary! Someone broke into a car on the 1900 block of Pomar Way. A bag that contained notary equipment, a seal, scanner and journal was stolen.

Wilted flowers: Police asked a woman selling flowers at the corner of Oak Grove Road and Peachwillow Lane with “obnoxious pink signs” to shut down her business because she did not have the proper permit to sell flowers.

Catalytic converter report: This time, one was stolen from a Toyota 4-Runner that was parked on the 3000 block of N. Main Street.

Sunday, April 10

Early tippling: A woman  was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public inside Crogans Bar and Grill at 1:26 a.m.

Arroyo alert: Do not leave any valuables in your car, especially if you are parked on Arroyo Way. The owner of yet another car was the latest victim of a smash ‘n’ grab. Two purses were stolen.

That's not fare: After a cabbie drove someone from San Francisco to Walnut Creek, the unknown person bailed on paying the cab fare.

Bra bandits back: Two men and two women were seen grabbing 35 bras at Victoria’s Secret in Broadway Plaza. They took off with the bras, valued at $1,680, toward South Broadway.

More carts stolen: Another Rossmoor resident reported the theft of a golf cart, this time a Green Yamaha G22. More reports came in of several other golf carts being vandalized in the past week.

Lime green hopes dashed: A man was arrested for being in possession of a stolen lime green bike. Alas, it was not Creek Diva’s beloved green Schwinn, but she is happy for the owner of this lime green Schwinn.

Monday, April 11

Stinky graffiti: To the punks who are egging the home on Primrose Lane, knock it off.

Immodest morning: Martha, aka the woman who likes to go pantless, was seen sans clothing covering her “lower half” on the 1100 block of N. Main Street at 9:47 a.m.

Remember your children: A 2- or 3 year-old was left in a Nissan Pathfinder unattended for about 30 minutes in the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center parking lot. Security and another person removed the child from the car. This is the same day Creek Diva found a 5-year-old wandering around lost in her neighborhood. Disturbing.

Tuesday, April 12

Soggy aftermath: A water line was vandalized at the former Longs headquarters on North Civic Drive overnight. Thieves took copper piping from the sump pump. The theft caused water damage.

Wheels abandoned: A bike was found on the lawn of a home on Candleberry Road.

Cart craziness continues: Reports came in of more vandalism to golf carts in Rossmoor overnight.

One relieved teenager: Kudos to the person who found and turned in a wallet downtown. A Las Lomas High student picked up her property later in the day.

Thursday, April 13

Schwinn discovered: A metallic adult Schwinn bicycle was found in bushes on Terrebonne Drive this morning.

Time to quit: A suspicious female was seen on the 1100 block of N. Main Street at 10 a.m. with a backpack full of cigarettes.

Buddy, can you spare a tow? A citizen reported a man was asking people for money to tow his car at the Valero gas station on Ygnacio Valley Road at 11:22 a.m.

Vehicles vandalized: Several cars were broken into overnight around town, a few on Holland Drive and two on Cochise Court.
