UPDATE: Look for Sunday Morning Shutdown of Eastbound Ygnacio Valley Road

Crews and heavy equipment to remove garbage truck involved in Friday morning accident.

UPDATE:

Look for eastbound lane closures on Ygnacio Valley Road Sunday morning as salvage and public safety crews remove the garbage truck that careened into a power pole Friday morning.

Authorities are planning to use heavy equipment to remove the truck at 6 a.m. Sunday, said Walnut Creek Police Sgt. Steve Gorski. Closure of eastbound lanes will be accompanied by re-routing of traffic, Gorski said.

A garbage truck struck a retaining wall and caromed into a critical power pole at 4:40 a.m. Friday. It knocked out power to the area Friday, including John Muir Medical Center and stores at Ygnacio Plaza.

The garbage truck tumbled into a ravine. PG&E was on the scene Friday.

The driver was treated for minor cuts, Gorski said. The truck was labeled US Eagle, a waste removal company in Napa.

John Muir lost power in three buildings, and rescheduled some elective surgeries, said hospital spokesman Ben Drew. Backup generators kicked in immediately, Drew said.

"We prepare regularly for situations like power outages and that training allowed for an immediate response from our caregivers and support staff," Drew said in an email. "Our physicians, nurses and staff did a great job and we received praise from our patients for the handling of the outage."

The power came back around 3:30 p.m. Friday at the hospital.

On Friday afternoon, eastbound traffic on Ygnacio Valley Road was jammed from Marchbanks Road to Civic Drive. That's because traffic was narrowed from three lanes to one lane at Marchbanks.

All eastbound lanes of Ygnacio Valley Road were pronounced clear late Friday night.

Traffic was flowing smoothly on Ygnacio Valley Road Saturday with all lanes open.

Walnut Creek police issued a 10:27 p.m. Friday alert that workers had restored the three eastbound lanes in the area of John Muir Medical Center.
