Update, 11:30 a.m.: Traffic started inching through all three bores of the Caldecott Tunnel Friday morning after a car fire sent several people to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and closed the eastbound bore for around 70 minutes. [See pictures of the fire here.]
The car fire in the eastbound bore on state Highway 24 was reported at 9:49 a.m., CHP Officer Ron Simmons said. A Sig-alert was issued at 10:21 a.m. Simmons said traffic was at a standstill and many drivers left their cars in the tunnel and were walking out.
Oakland Fire Department and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crews responded to the fire.
