Caldecott Tunnel Eastbound Bore Reopens After Car Fire Sends Motorists to Hospital

Update, 11:30 a.m.: Traffic started inching through all three bores of the Caldecott Tunnel Friday morning after a car fire sent several people to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and closed the eastbound bore for around 70 minutes.

The car fire in the eastbound bore on state Highway 24 was reported at 9:49 a.m., CHP Officer Ron Simmons said. A Sig-alert was issued at 10:21 a.m. Simmons said traffic was at a standstill and many drivers left their cars in the tunnel and were walking out. 

Oakland Fire Department and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crews responded to the fire.
