Fourth Means More Red-Light Running

According to a new report, Independence Day is one of the worst traffic safety holidays in California.

There’re more than fireworks to watch for on Independence Day, according to the National Coalition for Safer Roads. The National Highway Transportation Administration released a report saying the Fourth of July is the riskiest holiday of the year for red-light running.

The Fourth is second only to Memorial Day as the worst road-safety holiday. In California, 43 percent more red-light violations happen during the Independence Day travel period, the report said.

“Drivers should be extra cautious on the roads during all highly trafficked holiday travel periods,” said David Kelly, president of the national coalition and  former acting administrator of NHTSA. “Statistics about red-light running and overall intersection safety make this fact more tangible and heighten awareness about the risks that dangerous drivers create for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.”
