Man Arrested in Berkeley in Connection with Trying to Run Over His Girlfriend on South Main Street

Police track the 36-year-old suspect in the domestic violence incident and arrest him after a pursuit that led from Oakland to Berkeley.

A 36-year-old transient was tracked to Oakland where Walnut Creek police arrested him in connection with an August 22 attack on his girlfriend, in which he allegedly pushed her out of his car on South Main Street and tried to run her over.

Sgt. Tom Cashion announced that Damon Thomas Sykes, a transient out of Oakland, was arrested on Thursday. He is suspected of aggravated domestic violence in an incident that sent his girlfriend to John Muir Medical Center with a broken nose and other injuries.

Walnut Creek police had been looking for Sykes  for about 12 days and received a tip where he might be hiding in Oakland. They set up a surveillance around his car on Thursay and saw Sykes arrive at the vehicle around noon. But when Walnut Creek and Oakland police officers tried to take him into custody, Sykes jumped into his car and drove off. Oakland police pursued Sykes to Folger Avenue in Berkeley, where they were able to arrest him. Walnut Creek police detectives arrested Sykes on the domestic violence warrant and booked him into the Martinez Detention Facility with bail set at $213,000.

Sykes and his alleged victim were in a dating relationship, Cashion said. On August 22, they were driving from San Ramon to Oakland and stopped in Walnut Creek, specifically in the 1300 block of South Main Street.  That's where Sykes allegedly attacked her.
