Police: Head Injury Reported, DUI Arrests Made in Downtown Saturday Night

Walnut Creek Police Association article argues that 'fights and public drunkenness are the norm on weekend nights.'

The downtown bar scene late Saturday night and early Sunday morning brought a number of DUI arrests, a barroom fight and an intoxicated person with a serious head injury (likely due to a fall outside a bar) that required hospitalization, Walnut Creek police reported.

It brought into focus a report posted last week on the website of the Walnut Creek Police Association that makes the case that "fights and public drunkenness are the norm on the weekend nights."

The piece, written by Officer Randy Dickey, states, "These problems routinely monopolize all police resources and our residents in the outlying areas suffer. To date, city leaders have chosen to address the problem by slowly limiting new growth, rather than adding staff in proportion to the new growth."

On Saturday night and Sunday morning, there was one non-injury accident where the driver was arrested for DUI and four other DUI arrests, reported Walnut Police Sgt. Steve Gorski.

The intoxicated person with the head injury occurred outside the Spoontonic Lounge on North Main Street. Police also broke up a fight in the parking lot of the Lift Lounge & Grill on Locust Street, Gorski said.

"We also had the usual contacts and citations issued for things like urinating in public and public intoxication," wrote Gorski in an email. "In the majority of intoxication cases officers look for friends that can take care of people and get them home safely before we make an arrest."
