Police Urge People To Stay Safe This Holiday Weekend

Walnut Creek police, CHP, fire department and county health services issue safety tips.

With Independence Day right around the corner there are several advisories that Walnut Creek residents should be aware of to make sure that they enjoy the holiday safely and responsibly.

The Walnut Creek Police Department will have an extra eye out for people under the influence. According to Sergeant Sean Cooley the police department will have an increased presence downtown.

There will be additional patrols on surface streets to ensure that the streets are free of reckless driving.

"Alcohol consumption increases during holiday weekends and officers will be alert to those driving under the influence and will hold a zero tolerance to alcohol related offenses," Conley said in an email. "Please consider a designated driver to ensure everyone on the road is safe to enjoy the holiday."

The California Highway Patrol also plans on increasing their patrols this weekend and will be looking for drivers who are under the influence.

Conley also cautioned residents against using fireworks. Fireworks are prohibited in Contra Costa County — if a person is found in possession of them, they can receive a citation and be fined.

Fireworks are even more dangerous than usual because of the relatively high temperatures and increased winds.

The current heat wave is expected to continue through the weekend. Temperatures on Sunday will probably be in the mid-80s and may reach the low-90s.

With people spending a large amounts of time outdoors, heat-induced illnesses cannot be understated. Heat stress is a concern for people 65 years of age or older.

If you are an elder, here are some tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on how to stay safe during the current heat wave.

- Keep hydrated with cool non-alcoholic liquids. Very cold drinks can actually lead to cramps.

- When you're outdoors, try to stay in shade. If you're having a picnic, choose a spot near trees or set-up a canopy.

- Take a shower or bath to cool your temperature down.

- Do not hesitate to call emergency medical services if you or an elder in your presence seems to be experiencing heat stress.

The Contra Costa Health Services recommends elders to go to shopping malls, libraries, adult education sites, movies, senior citizen centers and restaurants on very hot days and during power outages. Although not open on July 4th, elders living in Walnut Creek are welcome to go to the senior club on hot days. Their number is 925-943-5851.

If you plan on bringing pets out with you this weekend, the CCHS advises you to make sure they are not left in a car. You should leave fresh water for them in a shady area and periodically check to make sure they have enough to drink.
