Shell Ridge Open Space Fire Completely Out

Firefighters managed to put out hot spots that continued to flare up on the north side of the ridge Saturday.

The fire that destroyed 180 acres in Shell Ridge Open Space Friday evening is completely out, a spokeswoman with the Contra Costa County Fire District said Sunday morning.

Firefighters spent much of Saturday, a warm, windy day, looking for and putting out hot spots, small areas that continued to smoke and flare up even after the fire had been contained Friday evening. Those hot spots were mostly on the north side of Shell Ridge, facing John Muir Medical Center and the homes along La Casa Via.

Except in one area, the fast-moving fire, which broke out around 4:10 p.m. Friday, never moved outside the loop of trail and fire roads that circle the base of the ridge.
