Transformer Explodes In Walnut Creek Neighborhood

Power was knocked out in the neighborhood around Walnut Acres Elementary School

A transformer exploded, knocking out power to a Walnut Creek neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened about 4 p.m. on Cerezo Drive near Ebano Drive in eastern Walnut Creek.

The explosion blew a large hole in the transformer sitting atop a pole in the residential area.

Electricity was knocked out in the neighborhood around Walnut Acres Elementary School,  although it appeared to have been restored quickly.

The stoplight at Wiget Lane and Walnut Avenue was out for awhile. In addition, car alarms could be heard beeping.

Pacific Gas & Electric spokeswoman Nicole Liebelt said 60 customers were affected.

No one was injured. A crew from a nearby Contra Costa Fire Protection District station came out to inspect the damage.
