Update: BART Service Running to Concord, Bay Point Following Derailment

BART service between Pleasant Hill and the Pittsburg/Bay point stations is back and running. Repairs to a derailed train last through the night.

Full BART service is running Monday morning between Pleasant Hill, Concord and Bay Point following a train derailment Sunday near the Concord Station, an agency spokesman said.

But the system experienced delays of up to 15 minutes as a result of a separate issue this morning between the Embarcadero and Montgomery stations in San Francisco that forced the single-tracking of trains through the Transbay Tube, BART spokesman Linton Johnson told the San Francisco Chroncile

Earlier this morning, BART had completed repairs related to Sunday's derailment, Johnson said.

BART officials on Sunday estimated that the process of clearing the tracks after Sunday morning's train derailment in Concord may take all night.

Crews worked to separate the cars, but the electric third rail that powers the trains was damaged, BART spokesman Litton Johnson said. It must be repaired before service can be restored.

The San Francisco-bound train derailed in Concord, causing major delays on the Bay Point line in both directions. Three people reported minor back injuries as a result of the slow-speed derailment about 9:20 a.m., according to Johnson.

On Sunday, there was no train service at Concord, North Concord or Bay Point stations because of the derailment. BART officials suggest that passengers from closed stations should go to Pleasant Hill Station for service to San Francisco/SFO/Millbrae. A bus bridge has been established in both directions between Bay Point-North Concord-Concord-Pleasant Hill stations.

Initially, Johnson had said that none of the 65 passengers on board the trains was injured.

The 10-car train had just left the Concord BART station en route to San Francisco International Airport when the eighth car's wheels came off the tracks. The ninth car's wheels partially disengaged, according to Johnson.

BART officials hoped to  have cleared the tracks for service before the start of the Monday morning commute.

An investigation into the cause of the derailment is under way, Johnson said.
